Pick one interface that looks interesting for you and check the user manual for "class compliant"
In some cases you need a Windows or Mac computer to switch ON CC-mode in the interface, afterwards connect the interface to a Linux computer and use the audio inputs and outputs of the interface directly.

UFX III introduces USB3 Class compliant mode.

Older HDSP cards work pretty much out of the box, like Multiface I & II with the pcmcia, pci or pcie adapter card. Run hdspconf and hdspmixer. It comes with alsa-tools-gui in any standard distro.
The AIO PRO is a different beast and needs hdspeconf which needs to be compiled.

Thats pretty new, the new firmware with class-compliant-mode was released in January this year.
You might have also missed USB.IO, USB.MADI, Digiface Ravenna and Digiface USB. We have started to add USB 2 devices that don't have physical switches to change modes, because the solution with Windows/Mac FUTs changing the mode turned out to work so well.

Summarize
The Digiface AVB is the only RME interface not to use on Linux
All other actual RME interfaces can be used on Linux
Old Firewire interfaces FF400 and FF800 can not run on Linux

Old Firewire interfaces FF400 and FF800 can not run on Linux
Just to chime in on this, I'm using a Fireface 800 plugged into a PCIe Firewire card on Linux, and it's working fine across the system as well as for using Reaper. There are a few guides out there I followed, and I went down a rabbithole of troubleshooting things and trying to overcomplicate my setup before eventually just going with .. the simplest approach. The baseline ALSA audio subsystem, no jack, no libffado stuff. The Firewire maintainer for Linux through 2029 is active and very knowledgeable, and these devices have been so well documented that they do work totally well. You have to set up a couple of pipewire and wireplumber rules, but it's doable, just annoying to wrap your head around if you also happen to be new to Linux as I was.
It's possible through using your huge brain or sic'ing your agent of choice onto the source code for libffado to engineer tools that'll let you hot-flash (e.g. apply settings to the mixer while the system's running) to control input/output levels, phantom power and the like as well; we're in an age where you can roll your own TotalMix replacement if you want to. To be clear, ffado-mixer basically already *is* this, but to use that tool you need to have jack/libffado claim the audio stack instead of the snd_fireface kernel, and I found that wasn't working reliably for my system, so it was necessary to try to build some stuff from the ground up.
I'm happy to share the specifics but just know that generally no one cares to see anyone else's slopcoded TotalMix TUI / CLI tool or whatever. But don't give up on your old hardware! It (and the fantastic driver support that I now miss) is what makes RME so fantastic.

You have access to all hardware inputs and outputs from Reaper ?
Yeah, I do. The interface is declared in pro audio mode within Pipewire, which exposes everything, and Reaper is using jack, which talks to pw-jack's implementation. Sorry that I messed that up from memory! I meant only that I wasn't using the full native jack stack and instead deferring everything to pipewire, always, more or less.

Looks like this. I'm able to use Reaper playback and e.g. watching something on Youtube at the same time, or be in a voice call or something, it all works fine.

Extremely crappy behind the scenes TUI totalmix replacement for flashing presets and such. I mostly had to do this because my 1/2 loops back into the headphones path and that's flashed into the mixer; I had no good way to go 'headphones only' without getting up and physically turning my speakers off because that was baked into the flash before I left Windows ha ha
