Topic: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

Hi again, RME gurus
Wanna use the Adi 2 as my DA/AD recording device.
Have the Adi 2 connected by toshlink cables to the Digiface USB. Adi 2 outs to my speaker system

Now thinking of using the 3/4 phones out of a Y Cable to my speakers + Outs 1/2 to external outboard and capture it INS 1/2 for recording (Mastering).

Adi 2 pro usually in AD/DA Mode, as some guru people here told me to do.
Probably software doesn't matter, but I'm using Wavelab.

Does it need any special configuration to do this? Adi 2 looks pretty simple, but has a lot of possible configs.

Well, thanks in advance

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

Most comfortable way to set up the ADI-2 is the software ADI-2 remote app.

Install AdI-2 driver on the computer, connect the ADI-2 with USB cable to the computer and use ADI-2 remote.

In WaveLab you can setup external effect thru channels 1/2 input and output directly to the ADI-2, no need of toslink and Digiface USB.

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

I think about this setup:

   +--USB2---ARC USB

PC---USB2-----------------------------------------------------------+ For ADI-2 Remote, firmware updates
|                                                                                           | optional: DSD playback
|                                                                                           |
| USB2                                                                                  |                            +---AN1/2 IN<---------------+
|                                                                                           |                           /                                         |
Digiface USB [cm]---ADAT4 OUT----[SPDIF]---->ADAT IN---ADI-2 Pro FS R BE [cs]---AN1/2 OUT--->Outboard---+
         \     \      \                                                                 /                         \
          \      \      +---ADAT4 IN<----[SPDIF]----ADAT OUT---+                           +---AN3/4 OUT---Neumann 120 v2
\      \                                                                                                (with source selector original (SPDIF)
            \      \                                                                                                vs. processed (Analog))

                +-------ADAT3 OUT/IN<-----[ADAT, 2x TOSLINK]---->Behringer 8200 [cs]

[cm] = clock master, [cs]= clock slave

Advantages:
- Uses AN1/2 (balanced connection) to the mastering chain
- Use the source selection switch for AN3/4 to switch between the original (SPDIF) and processed signal (analog)
  (I/O -> Phones Out 3/4 -> Settings -> Source -> SPDIF | Analog)

For the TOSLINK connections between:
- Digiface USB and ADI-2 Pro*, ADAT4 IN/OUT: use SPDIF protocol (2ch protocol). 2 TOSLINK cables.
- Digiface USB and ADI-2 Pro*: ADAT1+2:        use ADAT protocol (8ch @single speed 44.1/48 kHz). 4 TOSLINK cables.
- Digiface USB and ADI-2 Pro*: ADAT3:            use ADAT protocol (8ch @single speed 44.1/48 kHz). 2 TOSLINK cables.

Menu: Options -> Device Mode / DSD:
Basic Mode        -> AD/DA
CC-Mode           -> Multichannel
Dig. Out Source -> "Default" or "Main Out". Use "Main Out" if you have active monitors with digital inputs,
which sends the processed signal "Main Out 1/2" to the digital outputs.

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

Yoo guys, thanks for all your help smile

Adi 2 pro f is sending audio to my active speakers through the analog outs (Can be connected digitally too if needed)

My current setup is :
DIgiface USB sending Adat to :
Adat 1/2 Ferrofish 16
Adat 3 Behringer Ada8200
Adat 4 Adi 2 pro fs

Currently, I'm using the Ferrofish outs 3/4 to analog processing, then back to Ferrofish 3/4 to record my mastering, but wanna be able to use the Adi 2 pro fs instead. Pretty sure it has a much better conversion.
Maybe I can buy some Y cable and send audio through the 3/4 Phone Out from Adi, or just use the same Ferrofish 3/4 Outs I'm using, but capture it with Adi 2 pro fs.

All this setup thing is a nightmare, pretty sure I should have bought the Adi 2/4 version a long time ago instead of the FS Black version.

I would connect the monitors analog to make 1st experiences. Yes, to achieve that, you’d need to get a Y-cable (TRS to 2x TS) and connect your active monitors using unbalanced connections:
https://www.thomann.de/de/cordial_cfy_3_vpp_long.htm

Maybe you can connect your monitors also digital, because the ADI-2 Pro FS is also capable to pass through the digital signals, you can even use dynamic loudness, but careful not that it alters also the signal on AN1/2 out (connection to outboard).

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

Just notice, the Neumann's digital connection is SPDIF (coax.), so you have no galvanic isolation.

You could check Neumann's blog diagrams to see the signal flow. In the technical data, they talk about A/D and D/A conversion. Then you can see, which connection type maybe will save you perhaps a conversion.

Whether you use analog or digital won't make so much difference; possibly you can't hear any difference when comparing at the same volume. Therefore, I would concentrate on making an analog connection first.

These are the current new ones, DSP onboard and class-D amp, the analog input signal gets converted digitally straight away.

The "much better conversion" of the ADI-2 makes sense for the analog effect gear, but not for the monitoring.

I think too the headphone output to the monitors is good, then you can keep the XLRs for the mastering chain.

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

I'd suggest a completely different configuration that is much easier to understand and use, and gets full benefit from ADI-2's superior AD/DA conversion and processing.

• Get a TRS to 2x XLRm cable, plug it into ADI-2 Pro's front PH 3/4 and use this as feed for the mastering chain.
These 'phones outs carry the exact same quality as the rear connectors, the zero drive impedance even has an advantage if you drive transformer coupled inputs.
The resulting signal BTW will be impedance balanced.

• Analog mastering chain's return plugged to ADI-2's analog inputs, setting "Dig. Out Source" = default.

• Connect the monitors the 1/2 XLRs outs. There's no option to drive them digitally, as ADI-2's Optical in/outs are occupied by the links to DigiFace USB.

• ADI-2 set to AD/DA-Mode.

• Phones out 3/4 source set to SPDIF (Optical).

• With the Line out 1/2's source selector now you can, anytime during work, select to listen to the original ("SPDIF Optical") vs mastered ("Analog in") signal, to compare the result.

• A 2nd benefit of this configuration is, you can use headphones on PH 1/2 with automatically switching an individual setting of volume, balance, EQ etc.
Switching monitors <> headphones is done by plugging the 'phones, or with ADI-2's internal function, assigned e.g. to a button on the IR Remote.

A look at the block diagram in ADI-2 Pro's manual cpt. 17.3 AD/DA Converter helps to understand the concept.

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

A super important question :

Do I have to configure Total Mix for this to work ??

I'm using Totalmix to have the Digicheck meters, etc.
My Totalmix outs are assigned to 25/24; it's the ADAT 4.

Usually, I use the ``External audio plugin`` to send/return and capture what I'm doing with outboard. Will I be able to do this in the same way?

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

All you need to do is to send the DAW signal from the middle row (= audio from the computer)
to the output towards the ADI-2 Pro.

Easiest to perform in submix mode.
Select the HW output in the bottom row which leads to the ADI.
I/O Port ADAT1 is ch 1/2 - 7/8
I/O Port ADAT2 is ch 9/10 - 15/16
I/O Port ADAT3 is ch 17/18 - 23/24
I/O Port ADAT4 is ch 25/26

So
1. select in the bottom row HW Output ADAT 25/26 (which is the connection to the ADI)
On the bottom of all faders you will see ADAT 25/26 at the bottom.
This is showing you that you see the submix for the this selected output according to fader positions.
Or in other words what you route to this output.

2. Assumed your DAW sends audio to ADAT 3/4 (lets reserve ADAT 1/2 for Windows audio)
Then you will see metering on SW Playback ADAT 3/4.
Move this fader up, and you will have this audio on the selected output.

Never forget, in TotalMix FX every output (bottom row) has an individual submix.

Did you already enable a WDM device for Windows Sound?
Set number of WDM devices to "1".
Then you will see in windows sound a wdm device for this channel.
Choose this as default sound device for Windows.

Then you can add this channel to the submix.
Configure Windows Sound (3rd tab in sound settings) for no sound.
Otherwise, you have Windows sounds for arriving mail, etc., in your submix.

Save this to a Snapshot.
Save the workspace.
Save it to workspace quick select slot 1, then you can recall it by key combination ALT-1.

Send a screenshot of your TM FX routing.
With the submix to your ADI-2 selected.

This cable will do if your mastering chain's has unbalanced 1/4" jack inputs.

The interfacing would not be balanced in this case, so watch out for ground loop related hum.

Mastering the chain is now working; however cannot hear the main speakers (XLR Outs from Adi-2 )
Strange because if I connect my headphones to 1/2 front in, I can hear, so it's the back XLR Outs that are not working now

in PH 1/2 Source i can switch between SPDIF/ANALOG (Chain OFF/Chain ON), so really happy with this.

In Wavelab i have those channels selected (Mains), I hear the signal with the master chain working, but I cannot export with it, affecting the music I'm working on, and I wanna be able to print it full wet as it's the final result.
So, what am I missing now here?

Before, in Wavelab i had Ferrofish sending Outs 3/4 to INS 3/4, then using the External Effect Plugin in Wavelab, this way I could capture it, then when doing the render i could print the final result with the master chain .

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

I found some questions in your "quoting attempts".
Sorry, but you really should improve on quoting; it's difficult to find your questions.

It isn't that difficult to quote properly. One Example:
Can I have the Arc USB working with this setup? Always thought that it wouldn't work
Undertaker78 wrote:

TotalMix FX is doing the multiplexing between ARC USB - connected to the computer - and the recording interface.
With this, you can use the ARC USB with all RME recording interfaces.

RME recording interfaces with a dedicated (802 FS, UFX II/III) or shared (UCX II) USB port for the ARC USB allow you additionally to use the ARC USB in standalone mode (not connected to the computer).

Yes, you need one USB 2 port for the Digiface USB and one for an ARC USB.
It can also be a USB 3 port, because every USB 3 port is USB 2 compatible (has pins for USB 2 in the plug).

Sorry, but you are proposing the same thing that I did already here:
https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.ph … 53#p254153

With one difference: that you want to use AN3/4 for feeding the mastering chain.

In my design the intention is to use AN1/2 for the mastering chain to get a fully balanced connection
for the mastered audio ("production audio") to exclude hum for this connection entirely.

A little bit hum (if there is some) wouldn't be that tragic for the monitoring.
You mentioned yourself, that hum might be possible when using unbalanced connections:

Your idea to use the source selector for switching between original (SPDIF) vs. processed (analog) is excellent.
But it is also usable in my proposed design for AN 3/4.

As everything is basically the same like in my proposed setup I disagree if you say that you propose "a completely different configuration".

I assume you didn't read the whole thread ;-)

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

Using PH 3/4 to feed the masterimg chain in fact IS the big difference, splitting available resources in the most logical way:

For mastering no more than one stereo feed is need, that's what PH 3/4 offers.

For monitoring speakers AND headphones are used.
Line / Phones 1/2 offers exactly that, linked in a very usable way, with individual settings for both.
This make 1/2 the natural path for monitoring.

Regarding (impedance) balanced connection of PH 3/4:
Balancing is created at the receiver side, not the sender's.

If the receiver offers balanced inputs, either on XLRf or TRS, just the correct way of wiring is needed to use them with all benefits of balanced interconnection.
What's needed is just a two-wire +screen cabling all through, like offered by every professional microphone cable.

If the receiver is unbalanced, like it seems to be the case here (@Undertaker78: please tell us the model of the 1st device in your mastering chain to find out), no balanced sender can change that into balanced.

One has to take the usual measures for unbalanced interconnections to avoid hum loops like tying all send return and power line cables closely together to minimize the loop area, while feeding as hot as possible signals (+19 dBu) all through.

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

Ah, I see, ok. You want to have the ADI-2 Pro usable for mastering and monitoring via speakers or phones.
This is only possible when using AN3/4 for mastering.
Valid point, thanks for explaining, Kai.

Ok, then this is the last status of connection proposal.

The receivers worked without any hum or noise problems. Tried some random Y cables, and all worked.
Usually an Api 2500 or SSL compressor.

Everything worked, but in DAW could not find a way to print it, so as I had work to do today, I had to do the old route again.
Maybe Totalmix routing problem or Wavelab. Even tried with Ableton, which is much easier, but still didn't work.

If there isn't a way for me to print the mastered version in DAW i have to think maybe to buy the DAC version, just to use it for monitoring and headphones duties, and use the Adi-2 pro for the AD/DA in the final mastering stage.

Understanding this, even with so many elements, for me, is easy.
The worst part is the Totalmix and all the digital stuff. It's just a nightmare in my head...

Even so i have to thank all of you guys for taking the time to try to help.

With all these parts being very detailed, how will I route my DAW to print the final mastering result? Damn, I'm such an old ass ahah

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

Maybe it helps to go into the details of how TotalMix works.
I fear you are used the old-fashioned way, to pull a fader on a mixer, and then you hear that signal in your monitoring.
Perhaps not exactly this, but similar to this.

With TotalMix FX, an audio signal is not directly sent to the output but to the middle row; SW playbacks = audio originating from the PC. Be it Windows Sound, from Youtube, from the DAW.
This all appears at first in the middle row.

TotalMix FX works output/submix oriented. And it works now like a patch bay.
In submix mode, you select an HW output of your choice from the bottom row.
This output has an "individual submix".
You see what is being routed into this submix according to the fader positions from the top and middle row.
Top Row = HW inputs = audio from sources that are directly attached to the recording interface
Middle Row = SW Playback = audio originating from your computer.

Latency-wise, audio from the top row can be routed "on the interface" from input to output port in Near-Realtime.
A typical use case is a monitoring flow for a vocalist singing in.
He hears the backing track in the headphones, and sings, and he needs to hear himself with the least latency.
This you can achieve by routing the Mic input directly to his headphone without a DAW in the signal path.

Audio, which is being routed from SW playbacks, always has more latency, as audio has to go over USB (or alike).
And even worse, if you increase buffers, the latency can become big.

So, this submix / output-oriented routing approach makes the most sense, as you can control from where you get audio. Either in Near-Realtime from an HW input or with more latency from the PC via USB.

Therefore, you need to become acquainted with submix mode to think about routing from the output.
Select an output and now choose what signal needs to be sent to this ouput.
Either from the inputs (top row) or from the computer (middle row).

And if you think about this further, it's fantastic that you can configure routing individually for each of the outputs.
You only have to change the way of thinking. Not simply "I want to hear this and that signal and move the fader up".
First, you have to ask yourself for what output. At first you have to select the output.

And once you become acquainted with it, it is so easy and wonderful to work with TotalMix.
Just select the output in the bottom row, then inspect the routing according to fader positions
and then move a fader up or down, depending on what you need to hear.
You can also think about whether you can catch this signal directly from the inputs (in near-real-time).
Or to get it from DAW (because you want the signal processed).

There is an additional trick for you. You see the little button "sub" (in TM FX 2.x "submix").
You can click / toggle it.
Then you see only those channels from the top/middle row that actually route sound into the just selected HW output.

I hope this helps you. Enjoy!

Unclear what you mean, you have to play the music and record the return signal in a new track.
There is no rendering or print superfast in the background as it is possible with plugins in the DAW.

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

Wow, thanks again for the super detailed answer!!
Ok, so after reading this 3 times, it starts to make sense...Yeah, it works like a patchabay

So, in the morning, when I was reading here and trying to configure Totalmix i did something as you described here :
Started with the bottom row, middle, and top, and after reading this, I may have found the error.

So Totalmix OUT is assigned to 25/26 wich is Adat/SPDIF 4. In the middle row, the channel is up, so I can hear (DAW), and I saw in the top row (HW INPUTS) the hot signal coming to the INS, but as I put the fader up, it did that feedback/flanger because the audio signal was the same (processed by the mastering chain) (Backing in the same 25/26 channel...?).

Audio for speakers is assigned to ADAT/SPDF 4 to channel 25/26 and I'm returning it in the same channels, and maybe that's the problem, because I cannot route the mastering chain back to the same channel I'm hearing the speakers (MAIN OUT).

Can I assign speakers OUTS to other channels? 1/2, 4/5, for example, without changing the ADAT cabling ???

Hope this makes any sense... tried my best smile

Re: Adi 2 pro black fs for mastering duties setup help

As you are using the same Digiface USB's SPDIF out for feeding the mastering chain and the monitor speakers, you need to disable input monitoring in the Wavelab channel that is recording the mastering print.

Otherwise you would route back the DAW input to the output, the sound would "circle", creating a feedback or flangy sound.

Ok, I think you mean the signal from ADI-2 Pro AN 1/2 IN (from the mastering chain),
which arrives at the Digiface USB (through ADAT4) at HW Input ADAT 25/26.

Yes you are getting a feedback loop here, if you send this signal to the monitoring as well.
Then you are sending both to monitoring, the unprocessed signal and the processed signal.

Well .. pretty easy. Don't send the processed signal from HW Input ADAT 25/26 to HW Output ADAT 25/26.

The steps:
1. select the submix HW Output ADAT 25/26 in the bottom row.
Then you should see possibly two faders up in the middle row (which one doesn't matter) for audio from the PC
   a) from the PC (possibly SW Playback ADAT 1/2)
   b) from the DAW (possibly SW Playback ADAT 25/26)
  Thats correct.
2. But you will also see the fader in the top row HW Input ADAT 25/26 which creates the loop.
This fader has to be turned down.
NO this is not blocking your Recording in the DAW.
This fader is ONLY for the routing / the volume into the selected submix.

By this the feedback problem is solved.

If you want to switch between unprocessed and processed signal, this you have to do on the ADI-2 Pro FS.
Either on the device:
I/O -> Main Output 1/2 -> Settings -> AD/DA Source: SPDIF | Analog
If you select SPDIF you will monitor the unprocessed signal from ADAT (SPDIF) channel 25/26
If you select Analog you will monitor the processed signal from AN 1/2 (mastering chain).

To sum up

Do not route the processed signal from HW Input ADAT 25/26 to your monitoring.
Use HW input ADA 25/26 in your DAW to record the processed signal.

You could even think about recording the raw signal at the same time.
1. copy (or mirror) the submix of HW ouput ADAT 25/26 to HW ouput ADAT 27/28
Note: If you use mirror submix, then routing changes of HW Output ADAT 25/26 will be applied automatically to 27/28
2. enable loopback on HW output ADAT 27/28
Then this signal can be recorded on the corresponding input HW Input ADAT 27/28
3. and voila
record the processed    signal in your DAW using HW Input ADAT 25/26
record the unprocessed signal in your DAW using HW Input ADAT 27/28

No, because the audio signals need to be sent through this ONE HW output for two purposes
- for monitoring 1/2
- to feed the mastering chain 3/4

As I mentioned, you can switch between raw and processed signal at the ADI-2 Pro or by using the ADI-2 Remote software.
For that I would store two configurations in the user presets.
Preset 1: monitor raw
Preset 2: monitor processed

This you can assign to a key on the remote.
In Preset 1 this key gets mapped to load preset 2
In Preset 2 this key gets mapped to load preset 1

This way you can toggle it by
- one of the 4 front keys on the ADI
- using one of the keys on the remote
or
by using ADI-2 Remote software.

@Kais I choose to feed the mastering chain with the Phones OUT 3/4 then back to Adi-2.
Then, in Totalmix i assign a stereo channel from the main to be able to record. Don't ask me how I did, cause i dont remember, ahha, but in the end, all is working fine, so thanks for the precious help.
