Topic: Can not get my Fireface UFX (v1.63) and TotalMix 1.61 to work.

I have not used my studio for a while and now find that my monitoring system dos not function correctly with Fireface UFX  (v1.63) and TotalMix 1.61. No sound reaches the  headphone monitoring system.  I have been trying to get it working for two weeks without success.   There have been no recent hardware changes to my system. I'm using Nuendo-12 on Windows-11.

Are there some important software updates I need to install to get things going again?

Your help will be much appreciated.

Best regards,

Chris Palmer.

While this seems to be a rather old driver, no lack of updates can render the device non-functional... Please provide more details about the nature of the problem.

In addition to what Daniel says. Do other applications work that use the ASIO driver?
For example, Reaper or MusicBee Player?

Or Windows Sound... Is a WDM device configured in RME driver settings?
Did you configure it as the default sound device for Windows?
Can you hear sound when playing YouTube videos?

How does it look in TotalMix FX? Do you see any metering activity in the middle row (which is sound from the computer)?

If this all doesn't work, can you try another USB cable and another USB port?
Do you see USB transport errors (CRC errors) counting up in driver settings? You need to keep that window open so that the CRC check keeps running.

Re: Can not get my Fireface UFX (v1.63) and TotalMix 1.61 to work.

I only use Nuendo and Wavelab. They both play sounds correctly through my monitors (Mackie, Yamaha and Auratones). It is just when I want to send audio to the six channel headphone system using Totalmix to route to the signals to the headphone outputs that things do not work.

The routing on Totalmix is completely confusing to me. See attached pix. Sound is only received by Cue mix 6  when I raise the Cue 6 fader in the lower section of TotalMix, but 1 to 5 never receive any audio no matter which fader I move on Total Mix.

This is all totally baffling.

Sorry but I do not understand how to post images! I have two .jpegs to include but don't know how.

Chris.

Re: Can not get my Fireface UFX (v1.63) and TotalMix 1.61 to work.

First you have to assign the cue mix output in the control room to the software channel you want to use. Then select the hardware channel you want to send it to at the bottom of TotalMix and raise up the software one where the sound is showing on the meter. Then raise the hardware output. I use Cubase with the control room and use all 4 cue sends for headphone mixes using TotalMix.

You need to understand the way TotalMix works. You select an output and all the other faders are then what goes to that output. So while selected raise up any fader you want to go to it. Also helps to name the software channels and outputs.

Have you ever watched the various Totalmix tutorial videos on the RME YouTube channel?
You can upload images to a free hosting service like Imgur and post links here.

Re: Can not get my Fireface UFX (v1.63) and TotalMix 1.61 to work.

In the Control Room on Nuendo, Cue1 is connected to Adat(1)+Adat(2), Cue2 to Adat(3)+Adat(4), Cue3 to Adat(5)+Adat(6) and  Cue4 to Adat(7)+Adat(8)

If I select 'Cans 1' on the bottom section of Totalmix (Hardware Outputs) and raise its fader, there is visible audio activity although no audio reaches the Cue 1 physical output although there is visible audio activity on several tracks on the TotalMix middle section (Software Playback). Even if I raise the faders of all tracks in the middle section no audio reaches the Cue 1 output!

The above applies to all four Nuendo Cue sends.

I have checked all of the stereo In and Out jack sockets on the PreSonus HP60 headphone distribution rack and confirmed that all jack connections are good.

Is there a way for me to upload some Jpeg screenshots?

What exactly does "Cans 1" refer to? If Phones, what is assigned as Phones output?

'Cans' is the same a 'Phones'. It is a widely used term used in British recording studios and Radio stations referring to headphones. Apparently the term dates back to World War 2 when headphones looked a bit like tin cans!

'Cans' can also be called 'Cues' in this instance. See my definitions and routing in post 7 of this thread.

Re: Can not get my Fireface UFX (v1.63) and TotalMix 1.61 to work.

I know what the term means, but it would help to use the correct Totalmix nomenclature... And your "Cues" go to ADAT channels, not to analog output ports. So what would you expect your "Cue 1" output to be?

Re: Can not get my Fireface UFX (v1.63) and TotalMix 1.61 to work.

My apologies Daniel - I thought it was odd that you did not recognise the term 'Cans'!

The Cues 1-4 go from the UFX via ADAT to a Steinberg MR816CSX interface and from there via stereo jacks to the PreSonus HP60 headphone distribution rack.

The Cans\Cues 5 and 6 also go from the UFX via ADAT to a second Steinberg MR816CSX interface and from there via stereo jacks to the PreSonus HP60 headphone distribution rack.

Cues 5 and 6 are obviously not part of Nuendo's fixed number of 4 Cue Sends but can be treated in much the same way.  In fact, Cue 6 is the only one that is currently functioning as expected - If I raise the Cans6 fader on the bottom row (Hardware Outputs) of TotalMix it responds to audio activity on the Middle section (Software Playback).

Re: Can not get my Fireface UFX (v1.63) and TotalMix 1.61 to work.

Some good news!

I've deleted the current file in TotalMix and shut down and rebooted the entire system. After loading a backup TotalMix file and restarting everything, Cue mixes 1.2.3.4 and 6 are now working as expected!

Cue Mix 5 is still not functioning, but I can live with that for now.

Thanks all for responding to my panic.

Should I now perhaps bring the TotalMix and UFX software/firmware versions up to date?
