Topic: ADI-2 Pro EX -> Digital In - DSP - Digital Out?

Hi I’m interested in the following scenario: iPad/Apple Music -> USB-C -> ADI-2 Pro EX -> DSP/PEQ -> AES Out -> Another DAC.

Is this possible with the ADI-2 Pro EX? Will it retain the original bitdepth / be „bitperfect“ other than the PEQ modification? Apple Music max kHz is 192 btw.

Re: ADI-2 Pro EX -> Digital In - DSP - Digital Out?

From checking the user manual :

Should be no problem.

Page 7
It can be directly used with Mac OS X and iOS (iPad, iPhone).

The option Digital Out Source - Main Out (SETUP – Options – Device Mode / DSD) sends the
processed signal Main Out 1/2 to the digital outputs AES...

Why shouldn't it be? Essentially, that's how I use my ADI-2 Pro FS R. But what's the point of using another DAC downstream unless it is built into your speakers or performs some kind of DSP that the ADI-2 does not have on its own (e.g. some kind of sophisticated room correction)?..

And no, any kind of DSP is by definition and by intent not bit-perfect to the source.

Thank you! Then this is the right machine for my setup!

Thanks and regarding bitperfect - that is why I put bitperfect in quotes „“ and also mentioned „other than PEQ“. But let me change my question: Will it output the same kHz and Bitrate after the DSP?

Is Apple Music automatically switching sample rates on iPad OS? On macOS it doesn't, I tried some apps to detect and auto switch, but those are causing a short dropout upon switching, so I found it way too annoying when listening to playlists containing tracks with different sample rates.

Re: ADI-2 Pro EX -> Digital In - DSP - Digital Out?

Tidal on iPad (and iPhone) e.g. does switch sample rate, when using ADI-2. There's no annoying audible gap, as the very fast switching happens in between the tracks.

Other apps like "Documents by Readdle" do that too, I can even play the RME Bit Test WAVs, with positive results up to 192 kHz 24 bit, which seems to be iPad's internal limit.

Unfortunately I don't have HiRes files in Apple Music, and it's a bit complicated to adds some, so I can't check this path.

If you select USB as input, it will have to use internal clock source and SR set in the driver. Otherwise, you can use SRC to convert the input signal's SR for AES or SPDIF input to any SR set on the unit up to 192 kHz (even if you set the internal sample rate to the same SR as the input signal, it will perform SRC and act as a clock decoupler/reclocker). SRC is not available for the USB input. Refer to the user's manual (chapter 8.6) for more details.

Yes, that‘s the big advantage of ipadOS and iOS when listening to high-res music. It works seamlessly, changing the output rates on the fly with no audibly gaps for all apps, not just Apple Music.

Unfortunately, there is no PEQ available for both, though.

Connecting RME ADI-2 solves that very elegantly, with unquestionable high-end interfacing, processing, conversion AND analog amplification.

Plus, it's very evolved, the ADI-2 line exist for so many years now, with constant (hardware) updates, and still the first versions are supported with firmware updates and going strong.
For me the 1st Gen. Silverface ADI-2 Pro has been a one-time-invest, besides I needed a 2nd one, choosing the ADI-2/4 Pro SE.

Guess what - one still can almost equivalently replace the other with no audible lack in sound.
That's quality in the first place.
