Topic: HDSPe AIO Pro – request for native/fixed 5.1 WDM Speaker configuration

Hello RME Support,

I am using an HDSPe AIO Pro on Windows 11 with the current HDSPe driver.

I need a native 5.1 WDM Speaker endpoint for gaming, using the standard channel layout:
FL / FR / FC / LFE / SL / SR.

Currently, the Windows Speaker Configuration for the AIO Pro only exposes 7.1, not 5.1. I have also tried changing the Windows speaker configuration/metadata externally, but the driver continues to expose the endpoint as 7.1.

I found this older RME forum discussion:
https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=29777

In that thread, Matthias Carstens mentioned that the driver could use a fixed preselection, resulting in either 7.1 or 5.1 fixed (plus stereo).

Would it be possible to provide either:

a hidden/registry option for fixed 5.1,
a test HDSPe driver with fixed 5.1 support, or
an official driver option allowing the AIO Pro WDM Speaker endpoint to expose native 5.1?

I specifically need the game/application to see a true 5.1 endpoint. A 7.1 endpoint with software downmixing is not suitable because game engines render side and rear speaker positions differently.

I would be very happy to test a beta/test driver if one is available.

Thank you!

IMHO; In TotalMix you add and position the last 2 surround remaining channels to every channel you need side channels to. Front, surround or in case of side channels, L+R+SR+SL.

Thanks, but this is not quite what I am trying to achieve.

I understand that I can remap or mix channels in TotalMix. However, TotalMix only processes the signal after the game has already detected the Windows WDM Speaker configuration.

What I need is for the AIO Pro WDM Speaker endpoint itself to be exposed as **native 5.1 (FL / FR / FC / LFE / SL / SR)** instead of 7.1.

This matters because some game engines render 5.1 and 7.1 differently, especially regarding side and rear surround positioning.

I have already tried working around this in TotalMix, for example by sending part of the left side-channel signal to FL and part to SL, but the result is not very convincing. It is still different from having the game render directly to a true 5.1 speaker layout.

If the game detects a 7.1 endpoint, it renders for 7.1 first. Any routing or downmixing in TotalMix happens afterward and cannot change the speaker layout the game originally rendered for.

So what I am specifically looking for is a way for the HDSPe driver to expose the AIO Pro WDM Speaker endpoint as a **fixed/native 5.1 configuration**, as Matthias mentioned in the older thread.

A hidden registry option, test driver, or official driver setting for native 5.1 would be exactly what I need.

What about to set number of channels for WDM to 6? Game couldn´t use 7.1 and would use, I guess, 5.1.

Here comes HDSPe Windows driver 4.64. Changes:

- Fix for 4.63: New installer did not write the directory HDSP anymore.

- WDM: supports all surround modes, from stereo up to 7.1. Note: the mode is stored per sample rate, therefore even different modes are possible.

Yes,  we re-added the whole surround support that was removed a longer time ago. It seems like MS meanwhile fixed the bug that the set surround mode was not remembered. You'll find a long list now with several 5.1 modes as well to choose from.

Feedback appreciated!

Note: don't forget that surround needs a speaker device in  multichannel mode - see manual and Settings dialog.

Thank you very much, Matthias! I really appreciate you bringing back the full surround support. I’ll test the new driver with the 5.1 configuration and report back with my results.
