Topic: Durec playback silent

To make it simple:

I activate durec on input channel 9, which has a microphone connected, and on output ADAT 5/6.

After recording, i use the rmewavprocessor to produce 1-channel files, and all recorded sound is present as three files:

- m g_I_09_vocal.wav
- m g_O_19_guitar rec L.wav
- m g_O_20_guitar rec L.wav

But when I try to play the files back on the UFXII itself, channel 9 playback set to 1 and ADAT 5/6 playback set to 2/3, only the microphone sound is present. It shows signal on ADAT 5/6 (options set to postfx), but it remains silent.

I understand, that the microphone file has number nine, since it is channel 9. But I have no idea why the guitar tracks are numbered 19/20.

This is the signal path I "invented" to be able to record all channels.
Hardware input channels can be recorded and do play back.

But some are different:
Guitar Input on channel 11. Fader down.
In Ableton, source of guitar track is ext. in. channel 9, that goes to a stereo guitar bus, routed to ext. out 5/6.
In TotalMix, signal arrives in software playback channels 5/6. Since there is no possibility, to record that in UFX, I route software playback 5/6 to ADAT 5/6 and activate durec recording here.

Is that overcomplicated? Actually everything works fine, except that hardware output recordigs stay silent on the interface. Band recordings with many channels are perfectly captured on SSD, but it would be great to immediately hear what we just played in rehearsal.
What am I missing?

Thanks for all support

Re: Durec playback silent

User manual page 105 blockdiagram shows DUREC recording is for input channels only not outputs.

Try activate Loopback in the output channel and record the corresponding input channel.

hmmm

Text on page 105 says:
The recording signal is taken before EQ and Dynamics, on both inputs and outputs

why would there be playback buttons / assignment choices if playback wasn't possible?

Re: Durec playback silent

hmm you are right...

But you are not trying to playback and record at the same time, right ?

Is FX ON or OFF ?

How do you listen output Adat 5/6 ? Is a loudspeaker connected there ?

it doesn't seem to make any difference, if fx is on

And as I tried to say in my first post:

Re: Durec playback silent

I think there is some misunderstanding here. You can not play multiple single channel files via DURec, only the original interleaved multichannel files. You can also not select multiple files to play in TM FX, just one. So if you select your vocal 9 wav then the dialog also shows only 1 without brackets. Everything else is not available.

Your request is still met: after recording just play the (just recorded) multichannel file, then you can directly hear what you recorded.

I'll be glad to detect the misunderstanding : ))
Thanks for chiming in
I am not trying to play multiple single channel files nor am I trying to select multiple files at once.
But I cannot play what I just recorded – and it is reallz strange.

I made one, actually two short videos to show what is going on. The setup is explained in my first post: I'm having buses in the software playback section, and I route the buses to ADAT outputs just to be able to record them. I would appreciate if you checked that out.

Probably it is me to confuse things here, but I spent quite a lot of time and I am not able to find out what is going on.

Could you make this accessible without the need to log in?

Re: Durec playback silent

I stored the files on icloud and I wasn't aware that you had to log in.

Re: Durec playback silent

In your second video about playback, I don't know.
May be the routing of these input channels to the loudspeakers, make sure the routing is correct to the main-out.

In the first video you try to playback on the output channel while the Rec button is ON.
I would try switch OFF Rec and try again.

I'm not sure if that helps, it is just what comes to my mind what I would try out.

Re: Durec playback silent

Both videos show the same error - playing a signal out of an output that is not connected to speakers obviously won't be audible.

For the inputs that did not work - no routing to main/monitor - raise the channel's fader...

This is basic TM FX routing logic.

yes it is true - and it is the obvious - thank you and sorry to bother ...

Re: Durec playback silent

I come back to this with a last question, as I hope - please bear with me:

The manual in 38.2 explicitly says: "A click on the playback button opens a dialogue to assign channels. ... a playback is not only possible at the output, but also at the mixer input."

What exactly does that mean? This sentence tempted me to try to get sound from an ADAT channel. Because all physical hardware outputs already are in use, I thought it'll do the trick to assign a number of ADAT stereo channels as virtual recording and instant playback devices for a couple of instruments ...

Re: Durec playback silent

Sound coming out of the interface is possible over the outputs only.

The Adat input channel needs routing to an output channel.
You say your outputs are all in use, then sorry, you have to make one free.
Or step up to a Madi interface with additional equipment for having more inputs and outputs.

Re: Durec playback silent

Yes. thank you, I understand that now.
Would you mind to explain that statement: "a playback is not only possible at the output, but also at the mixer input"?

Re: Durec playback silent

Listening your multiwave-file split up into the individual channels at the input level in Totalmix gives you the freedom of mixing it (with FXs) individually to any output.
If the playback is only at the outputs, further mixdown is not possible and you would listen only one stereo track out of the recording.

You not only listen back the session, you also use some mix corrections (you have to mix down to the output) to find out if the session was ok or need more training.
Or you prepare the mix for the gigs, less soundcheck time needed or no soundcheck at all if you bring the whole set to the gigs.
