Topic: UFX Analog Inputs Noise

Hi,
Just got the new UFX and I must say I'm in love :-)

A small question:
Even if nothing is connected to the analog inputs, TotalMix shows small movements on their meters (around -98 to -104 dB).
Is that normal?

Latest drivers (0.964) and firmware (342) were installed.

Thanks.

Re: UFX Analog Inputs Noise

That's normal indeed - it's the AD converters' self noise.

Re: UFX Analog Inputs Noise

Thanks for the prompt reply Daniel.
Can you add an option to "hide" it in a future version of TotalMix?
I mean, an option to set a "minimum level" value for the analog inputs meters, so lower levels won't blink constantly on the numerical level display.
Thanks.

Re: UFX Analog Inputs Noise

Sorry, I don't think that is likely to happen.

Re: UFX Analog Inputs Noise

Okay, so I'll just minimize unused channels so it won't blink, and add noise gate (with Dynamics) to used ones.
Thanks Daniel smile

Check Level Meter / RMS Level and it looks better :-)

Alternative answers:

Just be extremely grateful that the (peak) noise is fabulously low at -100dB.  The RMS noise level (as shown in the specs) is at least 10 dB lower;

OR

Make a few TRS shorting plugs - take a TRS plug, open it up, short the tip and ring lugs together, close it up again - and put them in unused line inputs!

Yeah, I know :-)
I just looked for a way to make it stop blinking in TM, because it's attracting attention when it's constantly blinking.

Actually I am very greatful - I LOVE this device! smile

Thanks for the tip (double meaning :-) ). Tried it, but no change on TM.

Re: UFX Analog Inputs Noise

I just came across this thread and I'm actually seeing peaks around -55dB at times. Nothing connected, doesn't seem right to me.
Only just purchased this UFX (second hand) and it's one of the earlier models.
Any suggestions on how I can get the self noise down? Or is there something wrong with this unit?

At what gain?

Re: UFX Analog Inputs Noise

Hi Matthias,
The mic pres are all good, ie -96 thru -100. It's the line inputs on the rear. It's not constant either. All set yo +4dBv.
It's not always there, just noticed the other day and have been watching it come and go. I'll have to hunt down and see if something external is causing some interference.

Cheers,
Matt

Re: UFX Analog Inputs Noise

Hi Matthias,
Just thought I'd post a quick update on this...
Everything appears to be normal when I turn on my Avalon 737SP, which is connected to input 7. If it's powered down, I start to see some of the noise that I was describing. Weird, but no drama.

Regards,
Matt
