Topic: UFX Compressor Noise

This this the second time for me to post about this issue. i asked about it once and never got an answer.

I use the UFX totalmix fx compressors for tracking vocals. I hear audible noise related to the gain reduction happening. its like the clicking sound of turning a stepped rotary encoder, and that sound gets printed ti the recorded file (because i'm recording with EQ+D). To clarify this more, the noise is like tightening a zip-tie kind of sound , but of course a lot quieter than an actual zip-tie. It happens everytime the gain is being changed by the compressor. The test i did to confirm that is, i played an endless software test tone and i set a compressor to the hardware output thats playing the test tone. then i used the volume control on the tone generator software to increase/decrease the volume of the test tone to trigger the totalmix fx compressor threshold. now every time the gain reduction meter moves, i hear artifact zip-like noise proportional to the gain reduction meter. it's hard to explain it but if you did the test you can clearly hear it. Now the question is: is that a normal behaviour of the internal DSP? or is my unit defective? also i like to mention that moving the actual channel fader up/down or moving the gain knob in mic channels results in this kind of non-smooth gain change clicks. Please look into this because its annoying me so much.

Thanks.

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

after doing further tests, it turned out to happen with not only the compressor, but any software playback fader movement or mic gain knob movement. i have played a 200Hz test tone at 96K and routed it to an output, and then enabled loopback on that output and recorded it back to my DAW at 96K, with continuesly moving the Totalmix's software playback fader .The movement of the software playback fader or the daw's master fader resulted in the noise that is in this file (moving the looped back output fader in TMFX doesnt make that noise). Please take a listen. Please note that its a 200Hz tone and it might be annoying to the ears so turn the volume down before you start playing, then increase it to hear the noise.

Would love to hear your input on this.

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

Sorry for the late feedback. We were too busy with Frankfurt Musikmesse. Thanks a lot for the info and the wave file, we are examining this right now. Stay tuned!

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

There is a new firmware available for the UCX (190) and UFX (149) which solves this thread's title - the 'compressor noise'. Basically the control voltage was not filtered as intended and caused audible clicks on specific audio material.

https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/fu … in_fix.zip

Michael A also found another bug (video above): the faders show high amounts of zipper noise when Speaker B is assigned, on all outputs below the highest channels selected for Main Out or Speaker B. This will hopefully be fixed shortly in the next beta of TotalMix FX 0.98.

Thank you, the compressor fix is working very well, and i hope that you will be able to fix the Speaker B issue as well.

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

RME you guys are unbelievable.

As long as you keep this up I will recommend your products to anyone I know. I've already had 3 cards bought by friends due to my recommendation.

Outstanding support

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

Now i have found another problem.. after upgrading to DSP 1.49, the Reverb & Echo Return is DEAD!!! i confirmed that by going back to 1.48 and they came back alive HeadScratch :roll

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

Same here with UCX (190), no FX Return.

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

Correct and sorry. We were so busy checking the dynamics function that we overlooked that part. It requires a very simple fix, but also new flash tools, and these might take a few days. Please be patient.

No rush, take your time. I hope the FX fix doesn't affect the dynamics fix.

Hearing compressor and control voltage in one breath, does that mean that for the analog inputs the compressor controls the DCA's gain before the A/D conversion? In other words, the compressor is not just a DSP function but works in the analog domain, thus preserving the full A/D (24 bit) resolution?

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

No. This function is fully digital.

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

The updates for firmware 200 (UFX) and 150 (UCX) solve the issue reported in this thread and no longer have the FX send deactivated.

Sweet! Thank you so much for the update.
Has this DSP update also fixed the "Gain reduction of an odd channel not showing anything when the corresponding even channel is inactive"

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

I removed the latest firmware 150. It seems over the weekend we stumbled over the problem described by Michael A here

http://www.rme-audio.de/forum/viewtopic … 784#p72784

and are able to reproduce it. A new firmware will hopefully be available in a few days.

I am still having this problem and I have firmware 1.51 Can you send me a link for the best firmware for my Fireface UFX please.

Also when I select different snapshots I get a lot of noise and clicks.

Re: UFX Compressor Noise

You need the latest driver from our website with TM FX 0.983 to fully solve all such issues. Also your description is far too vague to know what is going wrong on your system.
