Topic: Protools, totalmix and software monitoring...

Hi All;

For those of us who are RME interface and long suffering pro tools users I would like to throw something out there;

I've been enjoying the relative luxury in Protools version 10 (insert yawn and sigh- it took Avid sooo long to introduce this feature!) of using 'low latency monitoring' mode while recording.

For those who don't know this function in the options menu of PT is pretty much equivalent to 'switch software monitoring off' in Logic or Cubase.
that is, in engaging low latency monitoring Protools will mute through-put to the track's output bus when it is record armed (also disables any insert plug-ins). To monitor your recording signal you must do so through RME totalmix. Easy enough and straight forward.

Here's my request:
I would like to be able to 'gang' the totalmix input fader with its corresponding protools record channel fader through midi or some such. This would effectively remove the need to constantly switch between TM and the PT mix window to change my monitoring level. In practice, raising/lowering pro tools fader would make the same move on the TM fader. I believe focusrite have a way to do this by use of a plug-in?

Matthias; is this a relatively simple feature to implement? or decades of code writing? ;-)
Anyone else interested in this feature or happened upon the focusrite implementation...?

This is exactly what Samplitude is doing when it's in Hardware Monitoring Mode. It even works for channels that go to an aux (headphone mixes made in your daw).
I *think* it works via ASIO and I don't know ProTools well enough to say whether or not this will work.

Re: Protools, totalmix and software monitoring...

This is called ASIO Direct Monitoring and unfortunately Avid has to add support for this feature. TotalMix already has an excellent implementation.

Re: Protools, totalmix and software monitoring...

Yet another reason to jump the avid ship and move to samplitude. The Guys at RME and Magix in Australia have been singing the praises of the Magix software to me for years. Maybe its time to take a closer look.... If I'm not wrong ASIO is a PC protocol? For that matter so is Samplitude too, I believe?

So we know PT will output midi data with the movement of a fader via the mackie hui and eucon protocols, therefore I would imagine if one could stream this midi data into totalmix (and make any required translations), one could talk to the other...

Re: Protools, totalmix and software monitoring...

I've been a US user of Samplitude since 1997, starting with an ARC44 4 channel ISA soundcard.

I've used PT at our university since 2000, starting with Mix24, now HD.

Sam is clearly superior, in ease-of-use and processing/editing features.  I produce a weekly 1 hour live-music radio show with Sam; PT would take twice as long to mix/edit the raw session.

Much better metering and mixer view in Samplitude as well.

Re: Protools, totalmix and software monitoring...

ASIO Direct Monitoring is Windows only, there is no equivalent on Mac. Some manufacturers who make software and hardware have created their own system for direct monitoring (MOTU, Avid) but this only works with their hardware & software combined.

I couldn't agree more. :-)

I was really looking forward to the 2013 OSX release of samplitude, but if ASIO direct monitoring doesn't work I'll stay with windows.
