Topic: Distorted sound when recording keyboard sound

Hello,

I do not know why and how, but somehow I cannot even record my Kawai ES-6´s inbuild piano sound  without a loss in quality. I sounds flat, sometimes distorted and not at all like the sounds on my piano.

I guess that I might have done something wrong in my set up, cables or the settings in Total Mix.

In addition I only get a stereo sound in AN 2, as long as I do not click on Stereo! but even when clicking on stereo the sound feels flat and not like the original.

Alternatively I can click on MS Proc, Inst and Stereo and get some stereo signal but again, with bad quality.

As I said, at this moment of time I only want to record the original sounds from my digital piano (no effects etc.) either directly or when I do a Midi playback through my keyboard.

My set up is a follows:

1 x 6.5mm Stereo 1/4" Jack Cable from Phone Out on my Kawai´s ES 6 digital piano to Instrument In on Babyface

I have a cuad 4 laptop with Realtek soundcard all with Windows 7 and Cubase 6 Elements

I am listining to the sound via the Phones Out next to the Instrument In on the Babyface.

Funnily enough when conncting the Keyboard´s Phone or Line Out to the Phones In on the RME´s breakout cable I get the perfect sound, like the original, but for some reason it is not monitored anywhere in Total Mix and therefore of no use to me.

I sincerely hope that someone can help in here

Thanks in advance

Re: Distorted sound when recording keyboard sound

I think the instr. in is mono, so you need to connect two T(R)S cables from you keyboard into the Babyface.

Re: Distorted sound when recording keyboard sound

Thanks, I see, my Kawai´s 2 TRS line outs are said to be unbalanced whilst the RME´s 2 XLR Line Ins are balanced. Would I need a special cable, adaptor or both? Can you recommend something?

Re: Distorted sound when recording keyboard sound

You need to connect the two Line Out ports of your Kawai to the two Mic/Line inputs of the Babyface, using a suitable adapter cable.

Your present connection is wrong in so many ways that I won't even start!

Re: Distorted sound when recording keyboard sound

Thanks Laurence... I gathered that myself now too ;( however, with regards to the cable the internet seems to give millions and no answer.... is it better to connect the unbalanced keyboard line outs to the balanced XLR Ins on the Babyface using a balanced or unbalanced cable?

Re: Distorted sound when recording keyboard sound

Inputs and outputs can be balanced.  Cables are just cables!  If either the input or output is unbalanced, the connection is unbalanced, no matter what cable is used.

I refer you to p. 8 of your Babyface manual.

"The Babyface has two analog microphone inputs that can operate as line inputs with levels up
to +12 dBu, when set to 0 dB gain. The electronic input stage uses a servo balanced design
which handles unbalanced and balanced signals correctly, automatically adjusting the level
reference.
When using unbalanced cables with the XLR breakout cable: be sure to connect the 'ring'
contact of a stereo TRS jack, and pin 3 of a XLR jack, to ground."
