Topic: Babyface Problem Routing to Monitors without FX

I am new to this forum, having recently purchased a Babyface.

I am experiencing the following routing issue in trying to set up my instruments with the BF.

When sending the input signal from a Motif XF and condenser mic through Totalmix and out through phones and external monitors, I am unable to get an outgoing signal if the input signal is dry. There is no audio output, and the software and BF show no output. There is no signal to headphones (set us as PH 3/4) or the monitors (AN 1/2). The input signal, however is fine, and shows up in the first row of TM. If, on the other hand, I enable FX in TM, then I do get an outbound signal which does play through the phones and monitors, and it increases in strength as I increase the FX out to the maximum setting. I am not running Logic at the moment, just attempting to set up routing through the computer.

If I play something from the software output, e.g. Itunes, I get a good signal on the outbound sends, whether I have FX on or off in TM. Obviously, I want to be able to monitor both dry and wet mixes coming from the attached instrument inputs.

I am running the BF on a quad core MacBook Pro/Lion 10.7.4/Soundcraft mixer (only for input signals) with the latest RME drivers. I have connected my external monitors via AN 1/2 and phones on the BF headphone port (PH 3/4). Because the output works in certain situations (as outlined above), it does not appear to be a hardware connection issue, rather a software one.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Babyface Problem Routing to Monitors without FX

Click the output channel (3/4 or 1/2) - it gets brighter. Set the fader of the input channel with the signal to 0 dB. That's all.

If you use software monitoring in your DAW it's necessary to lower the fader the same way all the way down or you listen to the output of the software (with plugin effects) AND the hardware input as it will be recorded.

Re: Babyface Problem Routing to Monitors without FX

Dear Knut:

Thank you for your response. What I didn't note in my initial post was that the faders that control AN 1/2 in the hardware input tier in TM do not move at all. Unlike the other faders, they will not move up at all. They appear locked at the lowest level. I am feeding AN 1/2 into BF/TM from the mixer signal which handles the physical instrument inputs via TRS to XLR.  If I raise the gain on the mixer or an instrument connected to the mixer, the gain level bars in TM reflect the change, but the actual software slider in TM doesn't move at all. Seems that this might be the problem.

I appreciate your assistance.

Thanks
SS

Edit: I connected the BF/TM to a MacMini running OS 10.8. In this case, I did not experience the problems that I wrote about. Everything (at least in my limited knowledge) appears to work without problem.  I did as you instructed as was able to obtain a satisfactory dry output signal. Any ideas on why this issue shows up on a MBP/OS 10.7? Thanks.
