Topic: channel labeling and routing

ok. after wrangling with this for many hours for the past couple days, I think I have a couple things figured out. finally.
control room, which is labeleled Main at the top of the channel and is outs 3 and 4, is for the headphones (that is to say for output to the headphones).
hardware outputs which is labeled AN 1/2, and is outs 1 and 2, is for my studio monitors.
(what has confused me, is that I assumed that the control room would have the studio monitors.
I failed to take into consideration that the analogue 1 and 2 hardware outputs at the breakout cable coming out of the babyface, are cabled
straight to the studio monitors. if I'm right, finally, I'll just call it a rookie error on my part.)
any comments at all super appreciated.

thanks alot,
Charlie

Re: channel labeling and routing

thank you very much Blair.
I think the big thing for me at the stage that I'm at, is to understand the deal with the numbers 1, 2, 3  and 4.
I am unable to get a clear understanding of the labeling rme uses on totalmix.
control room and main in particular are very unclear.
the way I have found to make things work is to step all the way back and say this:
there are inputs and outputs.
there are tracks and channels.
to route them, you have to route them by the numbers.
no matter what they are labeled, it is only logical that each track or channel could be given a number (from 1 to 4).
now hook them up.
I'm starting very simple. I only have a couple things I'm hooking up here. a microphone. and then 2 speakers (studio monitors). and the headphones.
I'm getting the hang of it. it's taking some work. but I am getting there.
I am actually quite good with electrical schematics and sequences of operation and such with machines.
this recording routing thing should be right up my alley.
a huge thing for me is understanding that for outputs, 1 and 2 means my speakers (studio monitors) that I have hooked up to the babyface xlr outputs.
and that for outputs 3 and 4, that means my headphones.
for hardware inputs, I only have 1 input (with a possiblility for 1 more analogue....................I am not interested in digital inputs for now).
for software inputs, I only have whats on my daw.
see, I'm getting there.      :-)          :-)             :-)

Re: channel labeling and routing

Click the "Assign" button in Control Room, set AN 1& 2 as Main out, set PH 3 & 4 as Phones 1. That should help make some sense here.

thank you so much Jeff.
I just did what you said to do.
it worked great.
it is immensely helpful.  thank you again very much.     :-)   :-)   :-)

Re: channel labeling and routing

Hi,

I Assigned AN 1&2 as main out and PH 3&4 as phones 1 and AN 1&2 disappeared from the Hardware Outputs display?? What is the problem here?

Also AS 1/2 in the Hardware Output is showing some signs of having output as the meter registers green when the volume is turned up. No hardware signal is attached to Input AS 1/2.

Advice or solutions are welcomed.

Thanks

None at all - AN 1/2 now appear in the control room section on the right...

Also AS 1/2 in the Hardware Output is showing some signs of having output as the meter registers green when the volume is turned up. No hardware signal is attached to Input AS 1/2.

Check signal routing in the matrix and/or reset the mixer.

Re: channel labeling and routing

is there a way to save my setup?

maybe I just don't understand the wording in the manual about snapshots and mix1, mix2................

and what workspace is?

ps: menext, I am a total newb here, but the idea to check the matrix view is so good.

if there is anything in the grid box for where software playback input AS 1/2 connects with Main out 1 and out 2, double click and remove it.   good luck.
