Topic: RME Babyface - Compatability Issue with External Mic Preamp

I am experiencing an issue while attempting to record vocals using an external Daking mic pre into the Babyface. I have to turn the gain down entirely to zero on both units in order to avoid overloading and distortion. It occurs to me that the signal may be passing through both the external mic pre (as intended) but also through the Babyface mic pre( not intended).  Or perhaps I am experiencing an impedance issue. What do I need to do to bypass the mic pres in the Babyface? What do I need to do to get the best signal through my external mic pre without the Babyface interfering with the signal? Thanks.

Jim

Re: RME Babyface - Compatability Issue with External Mic Preamp

Your Preamp has really high output: "For instance, your Mic Pre One can support outputs up to +22dB, but most audio interfaces clip at +18dB.  The gain control would have to be set so as to not overload the audio interface." (from the Mic Pre One manual).
What's not said is what reference the dB they describe has, it should be dBu though. The Babyface clips at +12dBu when you turn down the Babyface gain to 0. Did you try to switch on the input pad of the mic pre?
