RME User Forum → FireWire & USB series → UCX Question: VIA 6315N, PCI TI Chipset or USB?
I have a new PC on order, basic specs:
i7-3930k CPU
Sabertooth X79
32 GB RAM
I'm wondering whats the best port to hook up my UCX to? The VIA 6315N firewire port comes with the mobo and also, obviously, USB 3.0. I could order a seperate PCI or PCIe TI chipset to use the firewire but is it worth it? Will USB be just as good if not better? What will give me the best performance do you estimate?

On that system USB 2.o ports and USB 3 ports will work best.
The VIA based FW chip sets do not work that well in Win 7.
As long as the Firewire chip set is fully compatible and functional i.e., TI chip set, the USB 2 and Firewire will perform equally as well.
USB3 chip set can vary like Firewire atm.
It is best to check which one you motherboard has on it and then get the latest driver and/or firmware for it.

Thanks for the info, i won't bother ordering the pci card .
And just use the usb3 . If anyone is wondering the sabertooth board uses the asmedia usb3 chipset.
Would i have to install the intel drivers aswell as the asmedia or just the asmedia ones?
Hmmm is there known issues with the asmedia usb at the moment? Will the ucx have issues running on it@

I have not used the AsMedia chip myself but have read people having trouble with it.
All of the other USB 3 chips had issues that were improved or resolved by updating to the USB chips latest driver and/or firmware.
Most likely the ASMedia chip will too.
If this system is a desktop then you should have more than enough USB 2,0 ports on it for the UCX.
If not or if it is a laptop then try using a powered USB 2.0 hub.

as far as I know, there is a bug in the ASMedia USB driver, which prevents the rme driver from loading.
You should use another Usb port or you could try to install win 8 which has native USB 3.0 support.

Yeah iv been reading about a few issues with the Asmedia. Im gonna install a SIIG 3-Port FireWire 800 PCIe Card i think, just want to check that there isnt any known driver issues first with the model (NN-E38012-S3), its a TI Chipset so should be fine but want to be sure before I spend any more money (the system has cost enough!). Thanks, Ill look into Windows 8 too.
checking this out more i see the SIIG 3-Port FireWire 800 PCIe Card ships with "Unibrain" drivers, i believe they were non-compatable with the fireface, is this still the case with the UCX? What other options do I have for drivers on this, Windows drivers? Do TI have their own drivers for this?
Always use Windows drivers, not proprietary ones...

OK, i can instruct the company to use only the windows drivers when installing this. Would you assume this would now ensure full compatibility with the UCX?

Yes you should be fine with the SIIG card.
You will best off running the Firewire Legacy drivers that are built into Windows.
You can have the company set this up for you or easily do it yourself when you get the machine.

You should do this before you install the UCX.
Also don't forge that you will still need to hook it up to USB to update the firmware.
If your system has a limited number of USB 2.0 ports then I think you would be better off getting a USB 2.0 PCI-e card rather than a Firewire card. This will resolve any compatibility problems as well as make it easier to use and update the UCX.
