Topic: Meters in TotalMix versus Meters in my DAW (Logic Studio 9) with UFX

I have a UFX connected to my 2012 iMac through the firewire port.  I am running the latest version of Logic Studio and TotalMix.  I want to clarify exactly what the input meters in TotalMix (next to the big slider) are telling me other than the presence of a signal on the channel.  In particular, I often find that the meters for microphones 9 through 12 in TotalMix are redlining while the meters in my DAW (Logic 9) for the same channels are showing a much lower level.  I assume I should adjust the gain on the microphones so the level shown in my DAW is appropriate?  Is that right?  Why are the meters showing different levels for what I understand to be the same signal from the UFX?  Am I missing something?  Thanks.

Is there an input channel in logic's mixer? Check that it is at 0.. I had a similar issue in cubase and it turned out that there was negative gain on the input within cubase. If it's 0, it'll match up exactly with totalmix's levels.

Thanks but unfortunately there is no gain setting in Logic.  I have tried again with a slightly different question.

Re: Meters in TotalMix versus Meters in my DAW (Logic Studio 9) with UFX

I have a UFX hooked up to my iMac through its FireWire port.  I wonder if someone can tell me what exactly the input meters in TotalMix are telling me?  For example, for the Mic 9 input channel, is the meter telling me the strength of the analog signal being fed into the UFX by the microphone attached to that input (or, more accurately, the strength of that signal after pre-amplification)?  That is, will the meter tell me the level of the pre-amplified analog signal and when it is clipping so I can adjust the gain accordingly to get a clean digital data stream out of the A/D converter to the computer?  Or is the meter telling me the strength of the signal being sent to the corresponding output of the UFX post fader adjustment (in which case, how do I set gain?)?  I understand that all that is coming into the computer through the FireWire connection is the 0s and 1s coming out of the A/D converter and that the input fader does not affect the signal being recorded by the DAW.  Thanks.
