Topic: Upgrade from fireface 800 to UFX

Hi all,

I plan to upgrade from my FF800 who worked perfectly to the UFX. Main reason is the presence of the USB connexion and I also read the UFX might be used in stand alone mode, connected via USB to an external HDD

My only problem is I have a session planned on 12 and 13th of october and my FF800 will be gone by then...My question is : do you feel I should have enough time to get accustomed to the new UFX, let's say in about 6 days? I cannot afford to jeopardize this session, the musicians stay in town only 2 days.

I would appreciate your comments and experience. Thank you!

If you know Total Mix, you'll be able to use Total Mix FX in several hours. But...if I'm in your situation, I will try everything to postpone the upgrade after the important job. So many 'unexpected' things happen in our life....The box doesn't come on time....The unit is defective...etc.

Thanks Masaaki...and yes, I know Total Mix, although I have a limited use for it . I checked the tutorials available on UTube for the UFX total mix, which looks very different from the FF800's. But probably just because of the extra processing functions and FX's present here...these should not interfer with the input/output settings, I expect.

Nevertheless, your both opinions coincide : postpone the move until after the session : that sounds wise. Just need to get the FF800 back on loan (or rent) for 2 days.

Otherwise, I expect the sound quality is identical for both models?

Thanks again for your messages. :-)

That means it is as least as good as the FF800..! The main reason why I switch to the UFX is the USB facility : I use a FW800 r34 card with my laptop, but it becomes increasingly difficult to find laptops fitted either with a FW socket or an extension slot R34.

Would this mean the 50% price increase goes mainly to the extra features of the stand alone facility and the USB port?

Thks for your comments.

Re: Upgrade from fireface 800 to UFX

I couldn't agree more about postponing the upgrade(murphy's law is ruthless), but as far as I know, converters in UFX are better and that's what mainly justify the price difference.

Re: Upgrade from fireface 800 to UFX

Thanks to all of you for your input. I take delivery of the machine in Köln tuesday...really eager to put my hands on it. If anything goes wrong, I'll be back on this forum.

thanks for your help.

Re: Upgrade from fireface 800 to UFX

I use Total Mix for HDSP/HDSPe cards, and Total Mix FX for UFX depnding on the rig. There are some differences in user interface, like pan 'knob' in TM FX and pan 'slider' in TM for example, but they are essentially the same. Of course, TM FX for UFX does lots more, like EQ/Comp/Reverb, Durec control, etc. but you probably won't need to go into these things for several days. What you need is basic routing for sessions. As far as basic routing goes, they are pretty much the same thing. I just wished TM has the same GUI as TM FX, like pan 'knob' and the same shortcuts, but RME responded they don't have a plan for such a change in GUI for TM. I understand that cuz tons of TM users will need to learn TMFX's GUI, which is kind of pain and creates confusion.

Re: Upgrade from fireface 800 to UFX

I shall use the 2 same computers for the UFX as for the Fireface 800 : is there anything I should remove from them before installing the UFX, or shall the install shield detect all the necessary actions (delete drivers? total mix FF800?).
