Topic: FF400 sounds different with linear power supply

hi all

last night i took my MBP and the FF400 to a friend to demo the pure Vinyl software. silly enough i forgot to take the FF400's wall wart with me. to my rescue, my friend had a regulated lab power supply, so we hooked up the FF400 to a well regulated 12 VDC linear power supply. it sounded great--in fact it sounded better than i remembered the FF400 sounding in my system. so this morning i tried the FF400 with both, the supplied switching wall wart and a (rather simple) 317T-regulated linear 12Vdc power supply. and i did hear a difference, especially in the midrange. voices are a little smoother with the linear power supply.

the FF400 has an internal power supply that accepts 8...20 Vac or Vdc, i.e. all incoming voltages are rectified/smoothed again. why/how on earth can it matter what kind of 230 Vac > 12 Vdc supply feeds the FF400's internal supply??

do i really have to hook up a car battery to verify or can anybody give me an explanation for what i'm hearing??

i am puzzled. HeadScratch
