Topic: Running a synth through a DI... do I choose -10dBV, +4dBu, or low gain

Hi Guys,

I have started running my synths through a DI box and into inputs 1/2, 3/4.

Now that the synths are coming through a DI and hence are now balanced signals coming into the RME, which is the appropriate setting to choose in TotalMix?

Should I choose -10dBV, +4dBu, or low gain?

I was previously running without any DI box at all, but the output of the DI box is obviously a fair bit louder.

Any advice on this would really be appreciated!

Cheers,
Mike

It will of course depend on the levels into and out of the DI box wink

Set it where the synth's output won't clip (likely dimed), and the synth won't clip or saturate the DI, and then set the RME so it won't clip.  You might need to come into the RME's Mic Preamps depending on the DI and associated levels (sounds like your DI is "active" if its output is hotter than the Synth's own output).  6-12dB of headroom at the RME A/D's is generally a good idea IMO.

Done...
