Topic: How do I monitor when signal goes to external console ?

Just working on seting up my newly acquired FF800 - please bear with me, I know this must be basic... Used to have everything going/coming through my Yamaha 02R digital console connected to an internal PCI card so you see where I come from...

Here's the path: Guitar connected on front input 7, XLR (48volts is On, so signal flow). In Total Mix I see signal.  ADAT cables are connected (IN and OUT) to/from mixer and FF800 (no issue there when I playback).

Now, how can I get this signal hearable (in SONAR, I get signal also, so it can record, no issue there).  However, *while* I am recording this track, I want to hear it : here's probably where I am missing something.  In SONAR, Output is set to come from ADAT 7.   So again, no issue once recorded.

Of course, I could take an analog output from the FF800 and route it to an analog input of the Yamaha mixer : there, I would hear what I'm doing.  But is this the only way ? Isn't there something I must do in TotalMix so I can monitor from ADAT 7 ?  Or am I completely far out ?

Thanks,
Rob

Re: How do I monitor when signal goes to external console ?

Is your 02R clocked well ? Who is the master clock  ? The FF800 or the 02R.

Check at first in that way.

In a second way :

Open totalmix : do you see ADAT 7 level moving ? where doest it move at the top, middle, or botom ?

You have to learn how totalmixer works, without that you'll get trouble using perfectly your FF800.

Best regards

1) FF800 is master clock and 02R is set to receive from its WordClock In.

2) I do not see ADAT 7 moving... (If there was a way I could attach a PDF here...) : On third (bottom) row of TotalMix I get AN1, AN5 and PhoneL moving (and of course In7 on the firt (top) row).  I fully agree with you I have to get a better understanding of TotalMix... I just need a quick start here, so I can avoid having to capture through old way (through 02R) as a singer is getting here in 2 days...

Ops: UPDATE -

I am starting to get it: Asio Direct Monitoring had to be active fryingpan  - But on the other hand, I heard somewhere (?) that this might increase latency ??...  Then I need to go in Fireface Matrix and click A1 7 (or whatever is ideally not used by other playback..)

At least I did it and it worked.

How about this ''Asio Direct Monitoring'' (opinions on leaving it active all times ?? - Latency ??)

Then I can probably also monitor same way on an analog output, without getting *everything* playing back (should say ''overloading and distortioning'' as I experienced yesterday...) ?

Thanks again,
Rob
