Topic: Bonehead question-- convert Firewire to USB??? Is the FF800 a dinosaur

I am considering getting back into recording--- at least moonlighting. I want to revamp my portable gig which has included a laptop and my trusty FF800. The problem is that since I was in the business several years ago, many, many laptops don't come with a firewire connection. So somebody talk straight to me. Am i in trouble? Have I invested in a wonderful piece of hardware (FF800) that has been caught by the culture of computer-related obsolescence?
Or can I convert the firewire in some satisfactory way to the newer USBs--2 or 3, etc?

Please do advise. I know that I can get laptops still with firewire. But I can get one much cheaper if it doesn't have to have firewire. On the home/personal division for Dell, for example, there are only a handful of models that offer it. In business there are more.

Your thoughts, advice, would be much appreciated

You can get a FW card for the Express Card slot in your new laptop.  As always, choose one with the TI chip.  A specialist music-computer company will advise you.  The cards aren't expensive.
