Topic: USB-3 to 3x ADAT's please!

This is a request that the very nice folks at RME will make a USB-3 to 3x ADAT soundcard!

I have an original DIGI-9652 that works perfectly (for years!), and would love to have a 'mobile' version of the same, but very few new laptops have a Cardbus slot. However, new laptops are starting to have USB-3 ports, and I'm guessing the faster data rate could allow 24-channels In and Out.

It would be like the Digiface, but with a USB-3 port instead of the Cardbus card.

Maybe also a USB-2 port that only uses 1x ADAT port?

Thank you in advance!!

So will USB 2, see Fireface UFX

FF UC Or FF UFX do this already.

Re: USB-3 to 3x ADAT's please!

Thanks for the reply Daniel

The UFX only has 2xADAT ports, the UC only has 1xADAT port.

They also both have LOTS of analogue connections (which I don't need..), which, while adding to the 'flexibility', also add greatly to the size, reliability and cost.
I do like the simplicity of my DIGI-9652, and to have the same for a laptop would be super!

No, I didn't realise USB-2 could reliably carry 24 i/o, sorry.

Thanks again!

Or the Babyface, this one has 1x ADAT I/O and minimal analog (2 in, 2 out, phones out).

Re: USB-3 to 3x ADAT's please!

I agree that a USB2 based RME device would be a nice possible replacement for the aging Digiface IMO.  It would be nice if it had 4x ADAT I/O like the RayDat - then RayDat is aimed at PCIe/internal use, and a USB2 version for mobile/external scenarios.  I'm sure the price could be very reasonable seeing as this unit might have a single Headphone Output, and would eliminate the $300 PCI/PCIe HDSP/HDSPe/ExpressCard card required for a Digiface.  You can even use the headphone section off the HDSPe MADI card (already designed/a "NRE" expense "hand-me-down" at this point AFAIK) and advertise "even lower latencies than the Digiface - even using USB"!!!

It would seem that the FPGA layout off the UFX would be capable of handling a strictly digital signal flow (need to add 2 more channels to get to 32 I/O for 4-ADAT banks), and might also fall into NRE expense costs and possibly slash R&D for such a unit.  Just a thought...

cool

MADIface-XT+ARC / 3x HDSP MADI / ADI648
2x SSL Alphalink MADI AX
2x Multiface / 2x Digiface /2x ADI8

Re: USB-3 to 3x ADAT's please!

Now thats my kind of thinking!

A portable stripped-down USB-ADAT box.

Lots of ADAT ports, and just a few analogs (2x XLR Combo input, 2x Balanced Jack output + Headphones?), since its easy enough to strap on banks of AD/DA's.

Maybe MADI + MIDI + SPDIF to top it off?

Nobody's making anything like this at the mo, its mostly 1xADAT with loads of analog, or purely MADI/ADAT with no analog.

I've been looking for the simplest way to get 3x ADAT i/o on a new Laptop (no Cardbus or Firewire), and over USB2 or 3, I haven't found anything simple but effective out there.

My usage is both Live and Studio.

Live I can record 24tr off a digital desk straight to laptop - with a headphone mix and ambient mics, or rec 16tr and have 8 FX loops.
And the FX rack would be my own Laptop Rack, exactly what I want, every night.

In the Studio I can pipe 24(!) FX Loops from the Main machine to the Laptop as an external mixing FX rack, taking a load off the Main machine, and all my fave FX are right there! (bliss!)

It would be perfect!

Re: USB-3 to 3x ADAT's please!

me too! I go to Mac with ADI8PRO and need just USB or FireWire/ADAT/headphone box. It should be cheap.

Re: USB-3 to 3x ADAT's please!

Yes yes please !!!
Absolutely the same request as Katsu999: 3x ADAT I/O on a USB3 connection.
I'm boring with carrying my "big" tower computer + Display + Mouse + keyboard + cables... Only for recording 16 tracks with my two Fireface400 and my two Octamics, because of the only FireWire port...
And yes, a RME Device like a Digiface, but with USB3 (USB2 compliant), will be very, very great: imagine: 1x 3U Rack with my two Octamics and the brand new Digiface II (or Digiface UFX ?), my laptop, and that's all !! I have a dream....
And then, can you implement also TotalMix FX on it ?
As soon as the prototype version is ready, I propose to come in germany to take it rotfl

Waiting for...

Thanks
