Topic: FF400 vs VIA FW Controller [VIA 6315N or VIA 6308P]

Hello,

I'm building a new system as my main DAW and I would like to use an Asus Motherboard. It would be an Asus P8P67 Deluxe B3 (FW: VIA 6315N) or an Asus P8P67 Sabertooth B3 (FW: VIA 6308P). Still not sure which one to pick. I would like to ask you if these Via firewire controllers work well with a Fireface 400. Anyone experienced any problems with VIA 6315N or VIA 6308P?
Sorry if this was discussed in another thread, but I did not find anything related.

Thank you.

Anyone? Please, I need to choose a motherboard! I don't want to buy afterwards a PCI card with a T.I. chipset as it will cost me around 50 euros (almost 30% of the motherboard's price!).

I have no experience with VIA chipset but as you already know T.I. firewire chip is generally preferable.

If you are for an "Asus only" choice you are out of luck,
they like the VIA chipset in their lineup and you need an external card for sure.

If you are interested in alternative motherboards without an additional card
Gigabyte UD5 series P67 (GA-P67A-UD5-B3) or Z68 (GA-Z68X-UD5-B3)
have 3 firewire ports with T.I. chipset onboard,
but they are ~40 euros more expensive than the Asus boards you have selected,
so, very similar to the cost of an Asus+card combo.

However,
at the same money, probably I would go for the Gigabyte one (instead of the Asus+card combo),
but it's only a matter of personal choices here.

Thank you alphaomega for your reply. Yeah, I'm an Asus kind of guy. smile

GA-P67A-UD5-B3 -> is out of stock everywhere, probably it's/will be discontinued.
GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 -> I don't really need a Z68 chipset, and this motherboard is ridiculously EXPENSIVE in my country, ~100 euros more than Asus P67 Pro or Sabertooth

I guess I'm out of luck, damn VIA chipsets! I think I'm gonna take the risk and buy an Asus motherboard. If I experience problems, I'll buy then a firewire PCI card with a T.I. chipset. This way, there is a small possibility to pay a good price on a very good motherboard. tongue

Best of luck.
