Topic: UFX internal routing question and 'loopback'

Greetings folks!

I just took delivery of my UFX a few days ago and I'm loving it so far!  I've got an issue which I've solved in..well, not the most ideal way, and I'm just trying to learn more about the 'loopback' feature of the mixer, past what the manual can tell me.

USB driver:1.66    Firmware: 1.48
MBP i7  Running 10.6.8

The interface works great, love the clear/clean preamps, but I'm in a situation where I'd like to record a completely dry signal coming from my mic into Logic, but the broadcast software I'm using (ustream/justin.tv etc) I'd like to use a little vocal compression on such. Because things like Skype and Ustream are COMPLETELY unfriendly and non-configurable, I'm using software called Wiretap Anywhere to be able to grab any input off of the UFX, as opposed to channels 1 and 2, which is what they would normally use, and make a aggregate channel.

My current issue is this, Wiretap Anywhere seems to ONLY be able to grab off of hardware inputs off the UFX. So when I look at the interface of the application, I'm seeing inputs 1-30. I can easily select Input 9, and the mic comes through loud and clear. But I don't want to put DSP on the channel itself, as Logic would then record the compressed signal. So what I'm doing (and yes, people are going to cringe) is that I'm routing Input 9 through to Hardware Output 4, and then patching that BACK into the UFX on Input 3, and then running compression on Input 3.  So I'm still telling Logic to record off of Input 9 (the mic) but I'm telling Wiretap to listen off Input 3.

I'm guessing there is a way to do this using the "Loopback" feature on the hardware output channels, but I've unable to figure out how that affects routing.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: UFX internal routing question and 'loopback'

is that I'm routing Input 9 through to Hardware Output 4, and then patching that BACK into the UFX on Input 3

Route input 9 to output 3 and press the Loopback button of channel 3. No need for a patch cable.

Loopback will send the clean signal from input 9 to input 3. If you enable any effects in output channel 3 they will work on the input 3 signal.

best regards
Knut

Re: UFX internal routing question and 'loopback'

Wow, it saddens me I could not figure that out on my own. I just could not see any visual change in things. Thanks a ton, I will have to try that this afternoon. smile

Re: UFX internal routing question and 'loopback'

Greetings!

So as a follow-up, it doesn't appear that the input shows a signal on Input 3 at all for the purposes of this, but putting dynamics on the output 3 certainly did the trick with loopback turned on. Wiretap seemed happy with seeing it as a valid signal.
