Topic: Fireface 400 & External Synths

Sorry for the newbie question but have searched all over gearslutz and REM forums for an answer but alas....

I am running a Prophet 08 and Moog Minitaur both of which are unbalanced into my Fireface 400.  Have tried many different settinga but am getting high noise levels and static on all settings +4db, -10, Hi Gain etc and also tried using the PAD and Instrument settings on channels 3&4.  It is ok at low levels but when I try and raise the levels in Logic Pro 9 the noise is pretty bad.

Am failry new to the analog world having used soft synths for years so am at a loss on the right settings.  Am using unbalanced TS cables from both synths, should I grab a DI box to convert into balanced and put inbetween the chain?  If so should I use TS cables into the DI box ad TRS out of the DI Box and into the Fireface?  Which input channels on the FF400 are best for me to use for each synth?

Many thanks to anyone who can advise....

Rob

Re: Fireface 400 & External Synths

What kind of noise are you hearing, eletctrical hum or more like hiss...?

Re: Fireface 400 & External Synths

Hey Daniel there is a low level hiss of the circuitry of the synths which is the pleasing part, but if I try and raise the levels to infinity in logic (i usually mix lower than this but am giving an example) then there is huge static and an inherent humming.  This is particularly worse on the moog than the prophet but apparent in both.  I have jacked headphones in to both synths and no hum is there just the pleasing static.  I have tested them through total mix rather than logic and is still giving the ground hum at high levels.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks
