Topic: Please school me on input level/gain staging

I have a UFX and Yamaha MLA8 mic pre with analog out.

The analog inputs for the UFX are:
Lo Gain: 0 dbFS @ +19dBu, headroom 15dB
+4: 0 dbFS @ +13dBu, headroom 9dB

The output of the MLA8 are stated as:
Nominal: +4dBu (1.23V)
Max before clip: +24dBu  (12.3V)

I find I have to use the Lo Gain input setting on the UFX, and even then it's pretty easy to clip the input of the UFX way before I clip the input channel on the MLA8.

Is my understanding correct that this is basically because the MLA8 has a lot more headroom than the UFX? I'm not sure I'm understanding how RME is using the term headroom.

Thanks!

The MLA8 provides 5 dB more level (max levels 19 dBu compared to 24 dBu).
