Topic: How to simply control monitor level from Fireface 800 or UFX

Hi all

I'm currently looking to upgrade my Apogee Duet to either a Fireface 800 or Fireface UFX (in the next week or so) but my main question is how I can control and connect my reference monitors to them.
The main monitors (Event Opal) will stay controlled via my mixer but I want to get the Avantone active monitors and connect them directly to the Fireface (which ever I decide to get out of the 2).

All help on this issue is very welcome!

Steve

UFX has a controller knob on the front of the unit to adjust monitor levels.  FF800 does not, so you need to use a mouse to control levels in Total Mix or buy some kind of external controller.

Ah ok, thanks for that:)

As I don't want to have to go into Total Mix (all mixing will be done in my DAW anyways) and like to have a hardware control easily accesible it will rule out the Fireface 800.

By the way is it true that the Converters in the UFX are better than the ones in the 800? Would make sense since the UFX is a recent design compared to the 800...

There is lots of info here and on Gearslutz comparing FF800 to the UFX. yes the converters are better, but the bigger sonic improvement is the preamps, which are great on the UFX and not so great on the Ff800.

By the way, even if you mix in the DAW I think you would benefit from learning a little about Total Mix.  It is far more flexible than any DAW routing and an amazing feature of RME gear.

Thanks again:)

I will check out the Total Mix as soon as I have the interface here. Think I will go for the UFX as it stands, seems to make sense.
