Topic: FF400 Midi Drivers Crash MidiServer OS X Lion

Received my Thunderbolt to FW adapter in the mail today.  I installed FF400 drivers restarted with the soundcard still connected.  Opened Ableton Live 8.3.3, no issues, used it for a few hours, quit.  Turned off sound card and unplugged it.

Later tried to open Ableton away from the FF400, froze while opening.  Opened Console and found out that MidiServer was crashing because of Fireface Midi.plugin.  Uninstalled FF400 drivers, AudioMidi Setup started up fine.  Ableton starts up fine.  Reinstalled drivers, breaks MidiServer again.

I need to be able to use Ableton away from my FF400.  Has anyone noticed the same issue with 10.8 Mountain Lion?  Maybe I should just update?

Thanks for the details. From your description it seems this is a problem with the MIDI driver crashing when the FW controller is removed. We will try to fix this. For you the simple workaround is to start the computer with everything connected, not remove TB or the FF in-between, then it will work with any program.

Can you please try the new driver 3.10? It includes a special handling for a missing FW controller, maybe it already helps with the TB disconnection as well.

I have found the same problem, and this patched driver resolves it. Thanks a lot. Very pleasant surprise to find a brand new fix already available when I encounter an issue.

Details:

I have a retina MacBook Pro hooked into a Thunderbolt Display. My Fireface 400 connects to the Thunderbolt Display via a FF800 / FF400 converter cable. Everything works fine in the studio. When I undock the computer and take it home, Logic hangs on startup with

WOW, less than 9 hours between report and solution.  I am very impressed.  The first time I heard my music through the ff400 I was blown away (came from the korg zero8, sound improvement was night and day).  Now with the speedy resolution of my issue I am blown away by the customer service.  I have recommended you to everyone and now I will do so even more fervently.

@EddieD, are you running Lion or ML?  Thinking about upgrading if there are no issues.

I am having the exact problem.  Thunderbolt to Fireface 800-400 into Fireface 400 works fine, but once I disconnect the Thunderbolt adapter, my audio programs (MaxMSP and Ableton LIVE both) hangs exactly about 5 minutes, but does start up with an error message (in MaxMSP)   "coremidi: couldn't become a client".

Cycling74 (MaxMSP) told me to clean out the software and reinstall, and also download the latest RME driver.   Which driver am I supposed to download?  The latest one wasn't compatible with my Fireface I don't think..

ALSO!!!  The Thunderbolt Fireface 800 adapter NO LONGER BUS-POWER the Fireface 400, which is a HUGE disappointment...

You are not allowed to remove the Thunderbolt adapter - only the FF 400. And by searching this forum you would have found that TB is limited to about 7 Watts, not enough to power the FF.

To be fair, Apple does market Thunderbolt to be hot-plugable and on OS X it is. Of course that doesn't mean that your software likes to see a whole part of your computer just vanish into nothing. ;-)

Yes, it seems when I am not using FF400 (using CoreAudio for a class for example, I teach at Juilliard in NYC), I am "not allowed to" unplug the Thunderbolt (for Ableton LIVE or MaxMSP) and I have to have the Thunderbolt adapter hanging from a computer although I am not using FF400.  It is very unseemly and strange.

You need to first unplug the Fireface from the TB adapter so that the RME driver notices the removal. Then you can unplug the TB adapter.

Later you plug both back in. For plugging in it doesn't matter in what order you do that. You can either first plug in the TB adapter and then the Fireface, or you can first plug the Fireface into the adapter and then plug both into the Mac at once.
