Topic: MBP update considerations, security, stability, interconnect etc.

I need to update my 6yo MBP.
In looking at the current offerings, I want SD and no optical.
But the interconnect available is USB or Tbolt.
Has anyone used the Tbolt FW800 adapter with a RME FF800 and an external drive hung on either the RME or a USB on the MBP?
Stability is my big concern as is security of an already lousy connection of FW800.  Had a disconnect and reboot the other night moments before air show.
I also need to network 2 laptops fired by one LaunchPad via Cat5.  Has anyone used the Apple adapter to do this?
