Topic: Fireface400 Analog Balanced Outputs to Vintage Desk (unbalanced)

Hello,

I have a Fireface400 and want to mix OTB.  I want to use the 6 BALANCED analog outputs and also the 2 UNbalanced outputs (headphones output) into the line in of a vintage desk which has mostly UNbalanced line in's.  However, the first 8 channels also have an option to use BALANCED XLR connections.  Last but not least, the desk has additional 4 stereo inputs (line in only UNbalanced).

I have mostly unbalanced 1/4 to 1/4 patch cables in my home studio. Am I better off using a Balanced 1/4 to XLR on the first 6 channels with XLR or just use the 1/4 to 1/4 unbalanced I already have?  I want to go the most noise free route with the desk.  Regarding cables and output settings on the Fireface, Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks.

Felix

As soon as only one cable connection is unbalanced the main advantage of a balanced connection in your application, no ground loop problem, is gone. So go unbalanced with all, and if there is obvious noise or hum everything is ok.
