Topic: ADI-8 Pro and DIGI9636 possibilites for MIDI

Anyone know what possibilities are (if any) for getting an audio editor such as Cubase to recognize MIDI using the ADI-8 Pro and the DIGI9636 ? Is this even possible? I cannot seem to find a solution for this after sending to a 1/4" input on the ADI-8. Any insight on this would be appreciated.. thanks

You will need a separate MIDI interface, as the old DIGI card does not have MIDI built in.

Re: ADI-8 Pro and DIGI9636 possibilites for MIDI

Figured that. Thanks for response. Is there any simple device that can convert the ADI-8 optical to MIDI? I do have a separate sound card installed with an MIDI input on it, but can't seem to figure out any current use on the ADI for the 9-pin S/PDIF or the TDIF, as I do not use any type of traditional tape units such as ADAT. I would still like to primarily use the RME in my signal chain. Thanks again..

Re: ADI-8 Pro and DIGI9636 possibilites for MIDI

Would the RME Multiface or Multiface II possibly work with the DIGI9636 or if I were to run a bunch of 1/4" TRS into a Multiface, can that same signal be sent out of the Multiface MIDI output as MIDI info? I've never fully understood this regarding these type of units dealing with MIDI and haven't been able to find any further info on it. So I'm guessing the In/Out MIDI only works when running an instrument like a keyboard into it? HeadScratch

Re: ADI-8 Pro and DIGI9636 possibilites for MIDI

There is no way to convert "ADI-8 optical to MIDI". The ADI-8 connects to the 9636 straight by ADAT for audio transfer. Not sure what you are trying to do. The Multiface aslo does not convert audio to MIDI, this isn't possible. Indeed MIDI is about control signals from/to keyboards etc.

Thanks for the response. What I'm trying to do is get Cubase to recognize my 1/4" ADI-8 audio as MIDI (for drum trigger sample replacement). I'm not even sure if the Multiface would be compatible with the 9636 either, since I'm unable to locate any info regarding compatibility.

I don´t think it is really clear what you are trying to achieve here. Are you trying to connect your analogue out of the drumpads to the rme and then use those as software triggers. And what do you want to trigger then? Be as specific as you can.

Neither of the two devices will do that for you (and the MF can not be connected to the 9636).
If there are solutions for using audio as a trigger for MIDI instruments, they will either have to be inside Cubase or they would require third-party hardware. None of the RME hardware here will do that.

Yes, pretty much. I'm aware this is possible when using 1/4" inputs with drum triggers on units like the Alesis Trigger I\O while using a VST plugin in Cubase. I would have liked to use my ADI-8, but I'm learning here this is not possible. Looking for another solution at this point. Thanks for the response.

Yes, I've actually tried using Drumagog as a VST plugin, but the problem is being able to hear what you're doing in real-time, as opposed to just recording the 'clicks' from the triggers and then resampling them with Drumagog. Apparently the only type units that can currently do this in real-time are the Alesis Trigger I/O or the Roland units like the TD-8, TD-10, etc. The quest isn't to use the samples on the brain of the modules themselves, it's being able to replace them with what you want using a plugin, such as any of the ones suggested in the link you posted, BUT in real-time, not sample replacement after the fact.
