Topic: FF400 Win8 32bit Ableton Crash

Hi,

My fireface 400 always worked fine with Win XP and ableton but it does not with windows 8!
Firstly i have to power my fireface 400 externally otherwise it powers down after a while.
Second, which is the real problem: my fireface constantly crashes in ableton after about 10minutes....I hear a loud RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

What is the problem and how can i fix this?

It's connect to pcie card with TI chip.

Re: FF400 Win8 32bit Ableton Crash

Try setting the OS power plan to "High Performance" mode.

Does this only affect Live? What other software have you tested?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by crashing?

Your comment about it sounding like a "RRRR" sound is probably the same issue as mine.  It basically sounds as though an audio buffer of a few milliseconds is looping.

It may be the issue I and others have with firewire in Windows 8.  The legacy driver is not included.  Currently, after struggling and getting fed up with having to use the Win7 legacy drivers in Win8 I'm testing with a Tesycon firewire bus driver and it's been 100% for about 2 weeks now with all settings/buffer sizes, sample rates and in every application thus far.

Re: FF400 Win8 32bit Ableton Crash

The cause is most likely an issue with the combination of your Firewire port and Windows 8 Firewire drivers (which are different to W7 non legacy drivers).

Re: FF400 Win8 32bit Ableton Crash

@funkyspacecade: Yes, I think we have the same problem.
@Timur Born: Do you maybe have a idea on how to fix it?

Here's a guide for copying the legacy Win7 firewire bus driver for Windows 8, it was done on 64bit but you can do it for 32bit without much hassle I am sure.

Or perhaps try an old Thesycon firewire bus driver that I'm currently using which has been working fine so far: http://www.qimaging.com/support/downloads/  - scroll down to IEEE1394

You could try another firewire card but since there's no way to tell which chipset works perfectly I can't suggest anything off hand.  I'm also in the same boat with a SIIG PCI-E card with a TI chipset.

Re: FF400 Win8 32bit Ableton Crash

Can you still access the FF settings window or TotalMix and alter any values or volumes etc
during the RRRRRR? Would Ableton allow you chose different
soundcard driver and then re-chose the FF during the RRRRRRR?

Or do the fireface and computer just hang up completely or freeze...?

Re: FF400 Win8 32bit Ableton Crash

@Erbs Bischof: Yes i can. And when close ableton live during the crash....the sound is gone. But then i have to restart my PC to get the fireface working again.

Re: FF400 Win8 32bit Ableton Crash

Can you get it back to life by changing buffer size (which resets the driver)?

Does it sound like this?

This is my FF800 going RRRRRRR.
Video is low res, but you'll get the idea.

Re: FF400 Win8 32bit Ableton Crash

@Daniel: Have not tried that yet.
@Erb: Yes, I think it's the same.

@funkyspacecadet: Thanks! I just tried the old Thesycon firewire bus driver and it works. So far no crashes...hopefully I can finally make some music now.

Great stuff!  I hope it solves your problem smile
