Topic: FF UFX - Mic Preamp Gain from 0 to 10 dB

Hi,

The other day I recorded a drummer with my Fireface UFX who was hitting his drums so hard that only a gain setting of 0 dB for the overhead mics wasn't clipping the preamps. Unfortunately the next gain step on the UFX is from zero to 10 dB which was too much for this particular drummer and I didn't have pads at this time. I wished there were settings in between these two values to get roughly the same volume for both mics.

I know I can do this in post production but I'm really wondering why there's such a large gap of 10 dB at the lower end of the gain scale.

RME: is there something you can do about this with a firmware update in the future?

Sorry, no. This is the behavior of the preamp chip used in the UFX (and many other interfaces).

Sorry, this is hardware related... But then, there really is not reason to worry about less than 10 dB of "unused" digital levels. You won't even really have to physically normalize this.
