Topic: 800 port V 400 Port
Hi,
I have the original FF800. It came with a cable that only fit into the 400 port on the rear of the device. Is there any advantage to getting a cable for the 800 port and using that?
Thanks

Thanks for the quick response Mathias, and now I dont have to buy a cable;)
Out of curiousity, does 800 not perform better than 400, and do I have the standard issue cable (400 termination)?

I just bought 10m cable to test this out myself, and NOW I see this thread. Yay!
Clearly, however, there is a significant difference in behavior on my system... With the FW400 connection, every once in a while my FF will stutter for a second or two and then resume normal operation. With the FW800 connection, every once in a while the unit totally loses communication with the host for about 5 - 10 seconds, during which time the red Host light illuminates. When it goes out, operation resumes after the crackling noises dissipate.
Matthias, I'd be curious if you could shed any light on this situation. Thank you.
10 m cable is out of spec and does not relate to the above post/this topic.
Matthias,
Thanks for your reply. Pardon me, it's 3 meters, not 10. (It's 10')
So now that we know that the cable is within spec, can you shed any light on the performance difference between the two as I described? Or would you prefer that I start a brand new thread?
Performance difference???? According to your description it doesn't work in both cases. There is something broken so the 'difference' is an invalid point.
"Performance difference" meaning that when the problem occurs, the unit performs (or should I have said "fails") differently depending on the type of cable used, with the common denominators being a temporary disconnect and audio artifacts. Also, the failures have been consistent between two different computers: G5 Quad (400) and MacPro 8-core (400 & 800). And specifically on the MacPro, the problem occurs when connected either to built-in FW400 or a 3rd party Sonnet FW400 card.
If you could offer some insights as to what you think the problem might be (hardware, software, combination, something else) I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.
UPDATE: I'm now experiencing both the stuttering behavior as well as the disconnect/host light = red behavior using the FW800 cable. Matthias, in a previous post you suggested that there might be a problem. I'd sincerely appreciate it if you could shed some light on what you think the problem might be. Defective unit? Etc.
And again, please advise if you'd like me to post about this problem in a separate thread. Thank you.
