Topic: Ticks with Madiface

Hello all,

This is my first post on this forum. Thank you so much in advance for your help.

I just set up a madi rig with the following hardware:

RME ADI8QS A/D
Ma2chbox madi monitor
RME madiface express card
Asus N71Jq-A1 laptop, 4 GB RAM
Avastor HDX1500 external hard drive (using usb 3.0)
Pyramix Native 6

I've set up a 44.1kHz/24bps session with 8 mics recording and the system seems very stable but I get ticks here and there. I imagine it's either a clocking issue or a latency issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!
J

Re: Ticks with Madiface

So tell us something about your clocking, please!

Re: Ticks with Madiface

Sorry, I realize it must be a clocking issue. I'm not using an external clock. I'm only recording 8 channels so I figured I could get by without one. Is that not the case. My Pyramix clock source is set to MADI In and the master sync is "board hdspwdm". Is the clock from the ADI 8 QS not good enough?

Thanks,
Justin

Re: Ticks with Madiface

So the QS is acting as clock master and is switched to its internal clock?
I am not confident with Pyramix and the Matchbox, maybe somebody else can chime in?

Re: Ticks with Madiface

Hi,

I have the same issue with my Pyramix v7.1.10 Masscore, working native with a HDSPe MADI FX. Computer is based around an Asus p5kpl-am se, so not quite the newest board.

I found it is a performance issue of the host computer, as I get clicks during saving or at other moments when the PC clearly is doing something. It also gets worse with slower hard drives. Very, very annoying to say the least.

Does anybody know how to improve this?

Best,
Dirk

Re: Ticks with Madiface

Check your computer for DPC latencies and correct DAW-compatible setup.

Re: Ticks with Madiface

Are these ticks in the recording or only hearable in phones/monitors?

I would make sure that all not connected ADAT inputs are turned down in total mix.
If nothing is connected to the ADAT inputs, I also get ticks that are also visible in TM but if I don't route them to any output, they are not hearable.

MacBookPro M1
Logic Pro X

Re: Ticks with Madiface

I get the ticks also occasionally. I'm using an Antelope Orion as a master. If I change the sample rate from 44.1 (my usual) to 48 and then back it all works flawlessly. Now I do it everytime after boot up and it is flawless. I assumed it was the RME steady clock not locking correctly and needed resyncing or that the Orion hadn't settleds properly, whatever it works well now.
