Topic: aes 32 and adi-2 not locking

Hi I recently bought an aes32 hdsp interface to use in addition to my adi-2.
So I am connecting aes32's dsub aes in/out to adi2's spdif in/out (manual says adi2 can handle aes/ebu signals) using an 110ohm adapter cable configured as stated on both manuals, which is xlr pin2 to rca's(+) and xlr pin3 to rca's(-) leaving xlr pin1 which is the ground shield disconnected.

The only way to have them locked and synced is if I use adi2's internal clock but only on sample rates of 32 or 64khz, or if I use aes32's internal clock, which I dont want since i find better to use the converter's internal clock for best results.

When i choose the adi2 to be master (set to coaxial/pro/48khz) and aes32 settings to clock input aes1, tick on proffessional, they fail to lock and adi gives me the flashing 48khz led and aes32 a totalmix input noise and a flashing lock/no lock status.
Strangely when I bridge the aes input xlr pin1 (ground) to xlr pin3 the units immediately lock and sync (it even works if i bridge it to aes output xlr pin3).
The manual clearly states that pin 1 should not be connected, so what's the deal? If i dont bridge it it doesnt lock and sync. If i bridge it is there a possible damage/ problem? is the signal still professional balanced aes/ebu and not consumer unbalanced spdif? sorry about my ignorance on digital signals.

Any help would be much appreciated as I am in the process of recording and that's quite holding me back!
