Topic: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

Hi all,

I'm trying to get the MIDI over MADI working with the new Octamic XTC unit (loving it already) but have failed so far and just can't find an answer.

Here are the steps I took before posting:

Updated the XTC firmware to 25/36
Updated the HDSPe MADI FX card firmware
Got MIDI Remote 1.70

Made sure the MIDI ID was set on 0 on both the unit and the MIDI Remote software
Made sure I chose Octamic XTC and the HDSPe FX MADI1 MIDI in the MIDI I/O Setup
Chose MADI In on the XTC for Control (Inp.) and MIDI Over MADI in the MIDI Setup menu

The XTC Unit shows a solid green light next to MADI and three solid orange light next to CTRL I, CTRL O, ALL O

Yet the state of the MIDI Remote says No Resp.

What am I doing wrong or overlooked?
My OS is Windows 7.

Looking forward to the genius (and probably dead simple) answer.
Cheers

Re: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

The MIDI over MADI ports are number 2 to 4.

Re: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

Hi Matthias,

Thanks for your reply, but...

I went back to the HDSPe FX Settings, to the MIDI Remote 1.70 help, to the XTC manual, and nowhere does it explain how to change MIDI Ports. Is it something to do within Windows 7 which is not explained in the manuals? If so where?

The closest to MIDI Port I can get is within the MIDI I/O Setup page of the RME MIDI Remote which proposes as a drop down menu:
HDSPe FX MIDI
HDSPe FX MADI1 MIDI
HDSPe FX MADI2 MIDI
HDSPe FX MADI3 MIDI
AES-32 Midi Port 1
AES-32 Midi Port 2

Where would you choose Port 4?

Sorry, never worked with MIDI before and can't find any info in the manuals.

Many thanks

Re: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

MADI1 MIDI would be ok if you use the first optical MADI port to connect the XTC. It should work then. But solid orange means constant trigger, like a loopback. Did you disable MIDI Thru functionality in the XTC?

Re: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

Hi Matthias,

Yes I use the first optical MADI port.
I've now turned off MIDI cont. Thru under General Settings and have done the same for Control (Inp.) under MIDI Sources.

I now have a solid green light next to MADI and two solid orange lights next to ALL I and ALL O when I Start MIDI I/O on the MIDI remote (Status: No Resp.), and no light shows when I Stop MIDI I/O (Status: Offline).

Got the impression that MIDI Remote should just work.
Could it be that my unit is faulty?

Many thanks

Re: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

No, it can not be defective, at least not for MIDI control if everything else works. That means you still overlook something somewhere.

Re: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

Where can it be?
MIDI cont. Thru is OFF and I still have solid orange lights. How could I stop the constant trigger?
MIDI Remote doesn't recognise the Octamic since it's state is always No Resp.

Do I have to set anything under Windows 7?

Cheers

Re: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

Ok got something that seems to work!
Here are the settings:

Under MIDI Sources
Control (Inp.) = MADI IN
MIDI Ov. MADI = Control

The unit shows solid orange lights in front of CTRL I and CTRL O.
Status on the MIDI Remote is 'Online'.

Hope this helps!

These settings were in your first post already?

Re: Octamic XTC Midi remote not working

Oh no they were not!
Otherwise I wouldn't have spent all this time and effort to get it sorted.
I guess a line about these settings in the manual would be a nice addition for people like me who have never used MIDI before.

If as you suggested, the solid orange light means constant trigger, then what the unit needs is a loopback on the CTRL I and O but not on the ALL I and O.
Also the MIDI Thru functionality has no incidence on MIDI Remote. It can be On or Off and the remote still works.
