Topic: Problem with Cubase 8 and direct monitoring?

This may be Cubase, RME, or user error...  I'm not sure yet.

With direct monitoring turned on, if I monitor enable a channel in Cubase, and the slide the Cubase fader up to the 0db position, that on the corresponding input channel in the RME mixer, the fader is at the +3db position. I believe it should match the Cubase fader position (it should be at 0db also). I haven't checked the audio with a sine wave - just the position of the faders, and the position does not match.

This only seems to happen with the Cubase pan law set to 0db. At all of the other pan law settings, it behaves correctly.

I am using the latest version of TotalmixFX.

Apparently cubase reports centered pan with +3db to total mix. Try adjusting pan law in cubase.

Ok...

1) Cubase pan law set to "Equal Power" - both the Cubase fader, and the RME input fader are at 0db
2) Cubase pan law set to "0db" - Cubase fader @ 0db, RME fader @ +3db
3) Cubase pan law set to "-3db" - Cubase fader and the RME input fader are at 0db
4) Cubase pan law set to "-4.5db" - Cubase fader @ 0db, RME fader @ -1.5db
5) Cubase pan law set to "-6db" -  Cubase fader @ 0db, RME fader @ -3db

I believe the problem may be due to the pan law setting in Totalmix.  Unfortunately, the pan law control seems to have disappeared from Totalmix entirely.  Due to this, the problem may not be solvable at this time.

But that looks good. This is how it should be IMO.

   Why is that?  Why with the Cubase pan law set to 0db, should the RME input fader be at +3db?

because pan law 0dB means:
a centered mono source is split with 0dB to left and 0dB to right.
Since totalmix's pan has -3dB panlaw for mono channels, the +3dB fader compensates for that.
It is much more important what you get on the output row in totalmix than what you see at the input fader.
And be aware there could be different pan law settings in totalmix for mono and stereo channels.
I do not have cubase, so you have to do your test for yourself and see if it works correctly. Compare input and output level with different pan settings and different pan laws in cubase and see, if it matches.
