Topic: Config for control of 2x Octamic XTC from Totalmix UFX via DIN MIDI

I have been using 1x Octamic XTC with a Fireface UFX. I have successfully controlled the Octamic XTC from Totalmix FX via a loop of 2 DIN MIDI cables. I used the method pasted below which was from this forum.

After a previous enquiry on the feasibility of using 2 XTC units with DIN MIDI, I got a reply from MC which seemed to confirm that it is possible to create a MIDI control loop from UFX to first XTC and out (thru) to a second XTC and back to UFX. If a set of instructions to configure this correctly is available I would like a link to them.

So far, I have added the second Octamic XTC and configured the system in Totalmix FX /Aux Devices with both XTC units recognised and given different MIDI IDs (0 and 2). I have set MIDI control to DIN and also set BOTH units to MIDI THRU in the settings. Perhaps one of these settings is wrong since I currently do not have control over 48 volt phantom power settings on the second XTC unit (easy to confirm with the lights).

Can someone please give me clear instructions on the correct settings as this is not detailed in the manual.

What to do: (paste of previous forum post)

- TotalMix FX version 0.92 or up required.

- TM FX Options - Settings (or F3): Tab Aux Devices. This dialog is mostly self-explanatory (once you know it is needed for this functionality). Select 'ADAT 1-8', OctaMic XTC, the MIDI ports that you will use (1 or 2). Device ID can stay on 0, as you have only one device.

- As you click OK you already have all the additional options in the ADAT input channels of TotalMix FX, just click on the tool symbol: 48V, PAD/Inst, Gain stereo or mono, AutoSet can be controlled directly from the computer - not yet, because:

- OctaMic XTC: verify the unit is also set to Device ID 0 (SETUP - Options - General Settings) and that MIDI Control Thru is OFF (one below)

- Select the DIN MIDI port for remote control I/O (SETUP - Options - MIDI Sources). Set Control (Inp.) to DIN In. Set MIDI DIN Out to Control.

- Use two standard MIDI cables to connect in and out both ways.

- Route your analog I/Os to the ADAT I/O (seems to be the case here already) - SETUP - Options - Digital Routing.

Switch off MIDI Cont. Thru on the second XTC.

That did the trick - MIDI control is active now on both XTCs. Thanks.

Did you see my report of being unable to update firmware on new XTC? Here again below:

I could not update the firmware of my new second Octamic XTC (currently showing 21/35). I installed the latest driver on the PC (win 7 64) I am using for the update and then - with the USB connection active (showing the Octamic XTC as the connected device in windows) I launched the latest FUT. The usual updater GUI does not show. The app is showing as running in task manager but the GUI does not appear. I tried running it a couple of times - restarted the PC and the unit which was switched on.

Which driver and fut did you download exactly?

OK - turns out it was not the madiface FUT afterall. It was the USB FUT. The Madiface FUTs are trickier to locate on your site than the interface drivers and in my search in the driver area I had obtained the USB series FUT in error. Perhaps they could be listed on this page somewhere:

http://www.rme-audio.de/en_downloads.ph … _driver_uc

When I launched the USB FUT with Octamic XTC connected, the GUI did not appear so no error messages.

When I install the USB driver for Octamic and the machine insists on a restart of the PC, is the software only installing on the PC, or is it also installing to the Octamic XTC?

Perhaps a message about procedure is necessary - ie don't disconnect/power down XTC unit until reboot is completed. I disconnected the Octamic before restarting as requested and win7 startup would not complete. Windows startup repair utilities reported "bad driver". With the interface re-connected and powered up. startup completed just fine.

So I completed firmware update with the 2/5/2015 FUT - to 25/36. I then connected the older Octamic XTC to repeat the same firmware update. I got the "driver installed" message when Windows recognised the second unit and the message came up that the machine had to restart (again, even though no new driver install was run, just a second Octamic XTC connected) - this surprised me. After second restart of PC it was possible to update  the second unit with latest FUT.
