The inevitable has happened. The strange noise happened and the PS on my Multiface I PCI card has failed. Tracked down by swapping Firewire cables now I am noise free by plugging in the Multiface with an external power supply.
My question is: Will this last indefinitely or should I go shopping for a new PCI card? Am I harming the Multiface in any way by doing this?
You could try to find someone with electronic skills who is able to replace the voltage regulator on said PCI card. Otherwise just leave it as it is, it will continue to work with external power supply.

I could also order a new PCI Express card. I have a free slot. Will I see any performance improvement if I do this?
No, performance should be the same.
