It's my understanding that the Totalmix FX mixer output is truncated not dithered. Why not dithered?
It looks like if the Totalmix software encoded a SMART TPDF or hpTPDF dither on every output to be applied anytime Totalmix is actually used (gain change / reroute / mix instead of just static unity gain passthrough)(24 bit dither for a 24 bit output / 16 bit dither for a 16 bit output) then Totalmix would produce 3dB of the better sounding dither noise instead of 6dB of truncating distortion per output. See this ongoing discussion for more detail Link: https://www.gearslutz.com/board/high-en … yours.html
Maybe there is a latency penalty for adding it but given the software mixer is truncating, dither would improve output quality.
It seemed better to tack this on to this thread instead of the "add new features to Totalmix" thread. Since RME is a high end interface option, shouldn't it ouput at best quality if using it's software mixer in anything but unity passthrough?
