Topic: RME Babyface distortion above -11db - Hardware defect? Video inside

Hi everyone,

I have a blue Babyface which I love, but that gives me serious headaches recently.
It's XLR output distorts on every kind of source as soon as the output level reaches more than minus 11db!

I've tested different speakers, cables, OSX systems, iOS in CC-Mode, Samplerates, Sources (DAWs, Quicktime, System Alert Sounds) and Babyface Firmwares (2012 - 2017). I also checked different power sources.
I also tested different speakers (Neumann and Adam) with different settings.
The distortion above -11db is always there - that's why I think it might be a hardware defect of the Babyface.

My RME UFX behaves absolutely normal and I made two videos to demonstrate the problem:

1. Babyface distortion - System alert sounds + sound sample (both distorted)
https://youtu.be/tOXtLAVt8po
2. Exact same setting with RME UFX (no distortion / output = set to +4dbu)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXybrou … e=youtu.be

(the camera sound is bad, but still the distortion (and the difference to normal on the UFX) is clearly noticeable.

The serial number of my blue Babyface is 23506634 (bought at Thomann in 2013 - so it's just out of warranty)
If anyone has a clue or can help me out it would be great. (I've already spent some hours doing all the tests.)

Thanks in advance and have a nice weekend!

Hi RME,

could you please tell me if there is a solution for this problem?
Or do I need to have my Babyface repaired?

Thanks in advance

Send it to Synthax GmbH for a check. RMA available on their website. Or just call them.
