Topic: Fireface UFX & High Sierra Issues

Since upgrading to High Sierra, and reinstalling the 3.03 drivers, I'm getting audio glitching often enough that it has prompted me to register an account and post here.

I'd be working in Nuendo, or playing something in iTunes, and I would get the following spam in my console.

Any suggestions ?

I suspect this has to do with two things:

1. Security.

About a year ago, a buffer overflow in core audio was fixed. It stopped a malicious audio file from crashing parts of core audio and, by doing so, revealing parts of ram memory.

That made old bugs in drivers, as well as in apps and core audio itself appear. If one of these sends out buffers that are too large, security will stop it. Hence, dropouts, cracking, stuttering.

2. Firmware.

A problem that recently surfaced. When you install a new OSX release, Apple also sends firmware updates to certain machines. If you skip a release, it's obvious you might not have seen the firmware update. You'd expect the new system to check that... Well, it doesn't. Worse, Apple doesn't even have a master list, or one central repository for firmware. That popped up when they started developing the new firmware consistency check in High Sierra.

A test revealed that with one model Mac, a 2015 iMac, up to 43% of these machines weren't up-to-date, firmware wise. On average, about 5% of recent machines weren't either. Older machines (pre 2012), didn't have the problem at all.

And since there is NO documentation for devs for the firmware, hardly any tools to check and some updates aren't available separately, it's a bit of a mess, really.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem with my MBP 2016 and RME Fireface UC. I have latest firmware and drivers for UC, but I get glitches frequently and similar Console events like Christian mentioned above. Glitches happen when using Nuendo, VLC, watching Netflix, Youtube, basically whenever I have UC plugged in and it is used as a system sound card or VST audio device. While hugely annoying itself on playback, it is more problematic when recording, because recorded files are polluted with robotic kind of noises here and there, ruining the recorded contect randomly. No chance to reliably record anything like an ensemble/band, let alone any kind of live gig with this setup now.

This laptop, which I bought 2nd hand, but refurbished and warranty and AppleCare still valid, did have High Sierra installed with new APFS filesystem. I was able to roll back to Sierra to be sure Nuendo works ok (Steinberg doesn't officially support High Sierra just yet). However, using one Python prog I found, I was able to determine my current EFI was newer than what Sierra has to offer, because of past High Sierra install. I'm not sure if this is the reason for glitches, but I highly doubt it. No way to roll back EFI anyway, so I'm stuck with it till I can upgrade to High Sierra and hopefully get an update for EFI, maybe getting rid of glitches as well. Knowing how much Apple cares about details like this these days, I'm doubtful of this happening unless they get enough feedback about it.

What I'd like to know is that is this purely a RME hardware/driver/firmware related issue and has anyone else beside me and Christian come across this problem? The reason I'm asking is because if I contact Genius Bar to make an appointment for checkout or repairs and explain the problem, they will most likely blame it on RME unless I can somehow convince them this happens with ALL USB audio interfaces. Following Cyrano's links above I think this is really the case.

Then again, if there's a solution to make it work proper with RME Fireface, that's all I need. But having latest drivers and firmware, and tried out dongles and direct connections to MBP (and all the ports), I don't know what else there is to do.

What helped on my system was a clean install.
Had also dropouts with FF UC that did not happen in Sierra.

Cigame, thanks for your response, but just to make it clear - you got Fireface UC to work without glitches in Logic X and possibly with other audio progs (?) by doing a clean install of High Sierra? Can I ask what kind of Macbook Pro you have?

While it's too much work to make exact comparison to your Console event dump, I have also similar looking IOAudioEngineUserClient and HAL-"something" events happening in Console when the glitches occur.

I upgraded to High Sierra with clean install except importing Apps and settings from Sierra-based Carbon Cloned startup disk. Is that a clean install, actually? I don't know. But after plenty of eLicenser hassle, I got Nuendo7 project running with East West and Vienna Instruments samples streamed from external SSD USB-C drive. Activating ASIO Guard in Nuendo, I don't get much glitches anymore, but they do happen every once in a while, somehow more if I actually try to observe them in Console while playing back project in Nuendo. It is better now, but somehow not totally gone. Hard to say if this is because of USB-C external drive sample streaming, RME drivers/firmware or buggy implementation of whole USB-C in High Sierra and/or MBP 2016 hardware. I guess I just have to live this glitchy system now and pray for miraculous updates..

Do you RME fellas have any opinion on this?

Have you tried the following:

- A triple PRAM reset?
For Macbooks, a triple pram reset also resets the battery processor. Macs without a battery only need a double reset to reset power management on USB and FW.

To do a pram reset, hold option-command-p-r keys while booting till you hear the startup chime three times.

- SMC reset?

Sometimes, these help.

The problem is, it doesn't happen to all users. But all brands of interfaces are affected for a small group of users.

My FF400 is rock solid on Mavericks and Yosemite, but stutters every four minutes on El Capital and Sierra. The connection drops and comes up again. I haven't had any luck log delving in the last two cases. But I'm still on Mavericks for daily use.

And it's always some HAL function. It seems USB or FW are getting interrupted by some cloud function. And those are wide. Could be QuickView, spotlight indexing, Time machine backing up in the background, OSX update, messaging...

The only thing I've learned, so far, is that it's not a driver problem.

The firmware problems only recently surfaced. We're trying to piece together what's happening there. But while we can probe large numbers of macs for data, most of these have no 3rd party audio interfaces connected. I've even seen rare cases where this happens to internal audio. That's when it dawned on me that this couldn't be a driver problem.

There's even a new name for this phenomenon: Inter Process Jitter.

I'll try this on my Mac Pro 6,1 tomorrow when I start my day.

Of note, I've not yet encountered any issues with an Apogee Duet & High Sierra on my MacBookPro11,5 (Mid 2015) - If I had time to troubleshoot further, I'd see if I got the glitching with the RME on my MacBook Pro...

The watchdog message usually means the audio application (DAW) was not able to receive the requested data in time. Don't get confused about playback /recording, they usually run in a full duplex scheme even if you are only playing back in your DAW.

In our tests this message usually came up at buffer size of 32 samples at 48 kHz, but no longer at 64. Which throws up the question what buffer size anyone who is affected uses? If a higher buffer size fixes the issue then this is at least a workaround until Apple brings back the former performance.

Hi All,

I am experiencing a lot of weird issues with my UFX. It looks like it similar described here. What happens is that when I am working in an ableton session with a CPU load of about 30/40 percent. The sound just at some point get 'out of sync" and it starts to glitch like crazy. Check it here:

It start randomly, when I change the buffer to something else (lower or higher doesnt matter) it works most of the time again. If not I have to restart the UFX. When this glitching happens even when I play normal audio files from the finder it is distorted.

What I also experienced is that the connection with my arc is really dodgy with these projects. As you can see here (around 5sec):

It is very sluggish or doesn't even respond. When I work with the Ableton session with my inbuilt audio card everything works fine.


Specs: Sierra 10.12.6, macbook pro late 2016

Is there anything to do about this? Workaround? Its just impossible to work like this. The only thing I can do is just use the inbuild audio output and go with external in the soundcard.

I'm having horrible issues too. I can't record anything, at any buffer size, without it sounding like it's being run through an intense bitcrusher plugin. I'm using a brand new UFX II on macOS 10.13 High Sierra. My computer is a Late 2016 15" MacBook Pro that's maxed out on all specs (2.9 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, etc.). I'm using Logic Pro X but have tested this in other DAWs and the issue is persistent regardless of which application I'm recording in. The UFX II monitors just fine but anytime it interfaces with my computer, I get garbage going into the system. Playback is okay but what gets recorded is pure digitally distorted trash.

Has RME even acknowledged this issue? I bought RME because I was told they had great customer support but when I called about this issue, I was told I should send it in for repair (it was a BRAND NEW unit and my first time using it). Sweetwater Sound walked me through an hour of troubleshooting and labeled the unit defective. They sent me another brand new one. Just set it up tonight. Guess what? SAME ISSUE. I'm going to just return this unit and buy from Apogee or Antelope unless RME is fixing this imminently, as in within the next week. Because as of now, I just bought a $2,300 brick from this company and I want my money back.

They normally halve the most stable drivers and are always fast with giving support and updates. So I still have trust they will update and solve the problem.

This issue however I don't understand and is very problematic in my opinion: I just cannot work like this which is probably the same for you. During a recording session all works fine and just after 5 minutes it starts to crap out.
I am now in a situation having the most powerful macbook (same as you I guess) and it still sounds like the computer is too weak while it has to be a soundcard issue: With inbuilt soundcard it works perfectly fine.

@ 9: Make a backup of your current system, then install the latest 13.1. There is no way your problems can be solved from our side, an OS X update is the best bet that it improves the situation.

I'm having this or a very similar issue as well - I have to repro it again to check if I have the same watchdog messages in the console, but I (fingers crossed) may have a found a workaround by putting my UFX into class compliant mode.  Not an ideal solution obviously, but so far it has removed my audio glitching.

Disclaimer: am currently on Sierra, so I can't guarantee this is the exact issue.  But hopefully it helps somebody.

After a few hours of working with High Sierra, it looks like the problem is even worse. Almost straight after playback a session it glitches and distorts sad:(:(.

Would it solve anything if I start using firewire? This means getting 2 (!!!!) dongles: One from usb-c to thunderbolt 2 and one from thunderbolt 2 to firewire hmm

Whaddya know. Putting the UFX into CC mode got rid of the glitching for me as well !!

Don't have access to TotalMix, but looks like all the channels and whatnot are there and available for me in Nuendo.

Also: I'm having trouble seeing these kernel logs... is everybody using the Mac console app, and if so, which stream are you looking at? system.log?

I'm running RME Fireface UC on 2016 MBP, High Sierra 10.13.1, using Nuendo 7.1.35. Glitches are constant, sometimes choking the playback totally for a few seconds. Console messages are more or less the same as you guys have. High Sierra update didn't help, maybe even made it worse. My only option now is to use built-in audio in Nuendo and routing it to RME's inputs for monitoring. No way in hell to record anything meaningful with this setup, so I'm recording my modular synths and acoustic instruments to 2012 MBP which is running Sierra and also acts as a RME Totalmix controller. Not exactly very mobile setup currently, but it's working. I can hear the sound difference though; built-in audio is muddier and lacks something compared to RME.

I noticed something - when I had RME plugged in to 2016 MBP, but didn't have Steinberg's eLicencer USB dongle plugged in, Youtube and Netflix playback was smooth through RME, no glitches at all! Obviously, I couldn't test this with Nuendo. However, when I plugged in the eLicencer while watching Netflix, audio started glitching! I didn't have time to experiment this on further so I don't know if it is the eLicencer, USB hub or something else. Can someone confirm audio playback behaviour without eLicencer?

Hope Apple fixes this soon, otherwise I need to sell the laptop, RME or both...

I can only confirm your issues as of now: I too have the problems with the glitching and indeed: high sierra made it worse for sure.

I have the elicenser too, so I will check how it works without that.

Right now I have to do the same thing: use inbuilt audio and monitor through the RME, so cannot record...

Oke Tested a lot today and even without the Elicenser it still glitches as crazy sad

Is there nothing  the guys from RME can say about this? This issue makes the combination macbook pro 2016 - RME soundcard just unusable. This can't be right

Anyone tried out new High Sierra 10.13.2 (17C88)? This is not beta, it is available via normal update process. Update info clearly says: "Improves compatibility with certain third-party USB audio devices." which is certainly hopeful! I have installed it and it was long process, but no problems. However, I'm now away from Fireface UC for a while, so I cannot test whether the crackles are gone, because with internal audio I never had problems anyway. Anyone tried the update with RME just yet? Happy to hear of your experiences!

I had finally chance to try out RME Fireface UC with new High Sierra update and I have good news! Using Nuendo 7.1.40 with quite heavy Vienna Instruments-based music project, incl. reverbs and other processing plugins, I didn't get a glitches anywhere at all. Macbook Pro 2016 goes fans screaming most of the time, but it doesn't end up in glitches and crackles. Before, it was really bad, sometimes crackles were really long and almost choked the playback totally. I haven't checked the console messages, because it works now! Same goes with other audio progs like Sound Forge, but I don't use RME for much else.

I'm happy Apple found time to solve this critical issue, most certainly after great pressure from RME, other manufacturers and users. I hope this update solves your problems eventually as well, good luck!

Sometime ago I reported here my Fireface UC crackles were gone after High Sierra update 10.13.2, using Macbook Pro 2016 and Nuendo 7.1.40. This was indeed the case and crackles were gone from elsewhere too, like Safari and Netflix, Quicktime and VLC, etc. All good and I was happy!

But some two weeks ago I had to make a clean install of the macOS. To my surprise, with 10.13.3 clean install, I'm now back with crackles. It's not so bad as before 10.13.2, but still those typical console messages appear and audio crackles and almost halts occasionally. Less in Nuendo, more frequently in Netflix and VLC and playing back audio in general. It seems like CoreAudio is more at fault than ASIO Guarded VST audio in Nuendo, but even the latter is not totally crackle free.

Changing ports, getting rid of USB Hubs, etc. won't make any difference, or doing NVRAM or SMC resets. Also, in addition to haltingly terrible crackles and audio stops, I also get minor clicks in audio when listening to audio files or Soundcloud and similar, outside Nuendo. Clicks appear to go to red in TotalMix even though the files are not clipping nor are volumes boosted in VLC or anything like that.

Once again, I find it difficult to work with this setup. There's no trust when it comes to longer recordings such as improvised performances when tracking many tracks or just recording simple stereo file from synths, modulars, etc. Also, it is very embarrassing to demo anything to clients when audio suddenly drops and there's huge crackles from the speakers. I can tell you, it doesn't sound very professional and I'm now reluctant to have any outside producers in my studio! God damn, I fear this is losing work and money for me eventually!

Are there any solutions for this, have you RME guys found out what is actually wrong with this hardware/macOS combination and been in touch with Apple? I'm now sure 10.13.2 wasn't enough. Sadly, I can't go back to my magically working OSX setup from before nor do I know why it was working and clean install doesn't. I could try and sell this Macbook Pro 2016, but how can I know the problem won't be present in MBP 2017, new iMac Pro or maybe even with older Macbook Pro's with High Sierra running? I'd rather not get rid off Fireface UC, because I still like it very much. And if I would change to Babyface Pro, Fireface UFX or any other RME interface, would that even solve the problem?

I wish RME would tell us all how things are proceeding and hopefully offer some solutions!

Hi Stakule. Im in the same boat as you. I did already lots and lots of research but nothing clear. I tried emailing RME but not even a email back. I have to make playbacks to do recording basslines or guitars or whatever just to make it work. Unworkable!!
