Topic: Windows 7 Thunderbolt card / controller for UFX+

Hello!

There are at least 3 generations of Thunderbolt: 1, 2, and 3, which are not fully backward compatible (e.g. T3 connector is different from T1/T2).

1) What Thunderbolt version does UFX+ support?

2) What are RME's recommendations for Thunderbolt hardware for Win7 for UFX+?

Thank you!

See chapter 39.4 of handbook.

UFX+ is compatible to all Thunderbolt versions. For TB3 you need an adapter.

RME thunderbolt drivers even supports hot plugging for Windows 7.

There is no recommendation for TB HW required, as TB is basically external PCIe with hot plugging capabilities and standardized cables as pointed out in the handbook.

Thank you very much, Ramses.

Thunderbolt 2 seems a bit dated now... So if I get Thunderbolt 3 then I need that TB3 -> TB2 adapter. Do you think this additional cable/connection might negatively affect Thunderbolt functionality?

Re: Windows 7 Thunderbolt card / controller for UFX+

I do not think so.

For me personally it wouldnt matter whether to take a mainboard with TB2 or 3 simply because I have no other application than to connect the UFX+ to it, that said, I personally would prefer TB2 to get rid of an additional adapter.

But before fixating myself to TB 2 or 3 I would 1st look, to get a mainboard with a good socket layout, PCIe lane distribution across sockets etc .... Maybe socket 2011-3 for double memory bandwith ... eventually support for ECC RAM ...

Depends on your personal preferences.

Re: Windows 7 Thunderbolt card / controller for UFX+

Well, I already have Asus Z97A M/B which has TB hub. Asus sells a compatible TB3 PCI card so I can get it. The problem is that I do not see TB2 cards/controllers for sale over here. Only TB3. That looks odd.
