Topic: rme ucx to meter clarity m tc electronic SPDIF AES dsub

Hi,

I connected the original cable dsub AES of TC ELECTRONIC  of the Clarity M meter to the spdif adapter to the output spdif RME UCX. connecting it the clarity M recognizes the connection by turning the led from red to green but I do not understand why then does not communicate with what I listen on the mac, I have to do something in the TOTALMIX?

Yes you will have to send the signal you want to meter to the spdif out. In totalmix (in submix mode) click on spdif in the bottom row. Then make sure that the fader of what you want to meter is up (to 0db I would advice).

CLARITY M also provides stereo optical input through TOSlink, is the RME ucx compatible with this connection? at the quality level would it be the same or higher?

Yes it is. In the ucx setting panel you set the output format, optical to spdif(not adat). It will then send the same audio as over electrical spdif. So if you connect an optical cable (can be cheapest) to the TC meter it will work exactly the same. And indeed no cable spaghetti!
And since both connections are digital and the same data, the quality will be the same (perfect)!

So, in the Fireface panel USB Settings (Output Format) Optical> SPDIF and under Professional?

and on the TotalMix Fx panel leave as you told me in the previous posts?

The second cable, the first is for minidisc and other portable devices.
Professional is for the electrical out I think (spdif vs AES) so doesn't matter, but if something doesn't work try both.
I am not sure if on the UCX the electrical and optical spdif have their own fader (you will see it as soon as you set optical to spdif, the adats should disappear). If it has it's own fader click on it in the bottom row and set the source fader at 0db again.

also, choosing the optical format section in the fireface usb setting from ADAT to SPDIF does not find differences in TOTALMIX FX window, remain always SPDIF, AS, ADAT, AN etc. in the HARDWARE OUTPUTS.

2 questions

1)putting SPDIF on optical window in the panel setting of the rme ucx the output that activates on the totalmix is no longer the spdif channel, of the old connection with cable sub d, but the signal is active on "AS" what is this channel? it's correct?  P.s. clarity got the signal well from only AS active.

2)then, by mistake, I think, the optical input flap has broken in the RME UCX, and it has remained inside, the connector is not well locked, but easy to detach. can i feel sure with no problem with this plastic piece dropped inside my sound card? the flap door of optical out need only to avoid the red light beam if you do not use it or also to keep the connector well sealed or for work well the connection?

AS is Adat Spdif, so that is correct!
The flap is to keep dust out afaik. I think they always break sooner or later.  I have plenty of devices without a flap by design and they still work after years and years. Some have a dummy safety plug when you buy them but I always misplace them. I would not worry.

I did a test between (output format> SPDIF> Consumer) and (output format> SPDIF> Professional), the data on the meter display are the same, but I would like to know exactly which setting, Consumer or Professional, in the manual is not well clear.

On the optical connection there is no real difference. On the coaxial connection Pro results in a higher carrier voltage which can help with cable losses.

The difference between Pro and Consumer state is well documented in earlier manuals, for example here on page 73:

After reading this you might agree that you just wasted 5 minutes of your time...that's why it's no longer part of the manuals.
