Topic: Digital Patch Bay - TotalMix - How To Do It ???

I need advise on connecting analog hardware to an RME setup using the items listed below.

AUDIO INTERFACE - HDSPE MADI FX (TOTAL MIXFX V1.5)(MADI CABLE DUPLEX)
AD/DA - RME ADI8-QS (MADI OPTION INSTALLED)(MADI CABLE DUPLEX)
OUTBOARD HARDWARE - DUAL MONO (ANALOG COMPRESSOR)(XLR TO TRS CABLE)

Basically I want to connect the outboard comp to the analog I/O of the adi8-qs, and use the routing capabilities of total mix, to access the hardware, (Example : Mic Input/Pre via trs line in on the adi8-qs, using the comp), no DAW software required.....

I have looked at the hardware version of this same concept, (Dangerous Music Liaison), but I would rather use total mix to achieve the same result, if it's possible.

I plan to add more outboard hardware in the future, but I need to grasp the concept first.

Any guidance from the totalmix experts would be greatly appreciated........... Thank You......... Brian Edwards

Re: Digital Patch Bay - TotalMix - How To Do It ???

RME: "Any to any routing", loopback support, structured and logic operational concept.
Of course you can connect outboard equipment to outputs and can record the result by the inputs.
And much more.
When using the HDSPe MADI FX card and the driver only uses recources from PC for _used_ audio channels.
Digicheck tools and Global record are a major win on Top.
Also FX effects. And failover functionality.

Re: Digital Patch Bay - TotalMix - How To Do It ???

Thank you ramses, would you happen to have a TotalMix FX example for a single out board device ?

Is RME: "Any to any routing" another topic on this forum ?

Sorry, i'm very new to the routing concept.

Re: Digital Patch Bay - TotalMix - How To Do It ???

Mono example

Connect outboard device
- input to i.e. analog 3 out
- output to i.e. analog 3 in

TM: ensure to be in submix mode

Click to channel "HW output: analog 3 out" to see its submix.
Raise the Fader of the SW Playback channel (coming from application / DAW) which you wanna send through outboard, might be SW playback 3 or any other channel from DAW, as you like/need.

By this you should see
- on your outboard equipment an input signal
- in TM FX, HW inputs, Analog 3 IN you should see signal coming from Outboard equipment

HW inputs are always passed in TM FX to the Application (DAW).
So in the DAW you see signal from HW Input Analog 3, which you can record there or whatever.

Easiest is to work HW output by HW output (every HW output is a submix).
You only need to raise the fader of HW inputs or SW playback channels to create a submix.

The darwaing and explanations in my blog article might help. Its all easier than you think if you understand submix mode.

Here another example / use case how nice routing in TM can be.
