Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

The strongest quoting you achieve with single quotes ('...') compared to double quotes ("...").

In short:

Single quote    ('...'): inhibits all interpretation of a sequence of characters.
Double quote ("..."): suppresses most of the interpretation of a sequence of characters.

More verbose:

Single quotes ('...') are used to preserve the literal value of each character enclosed within the quotes. A single quote may not occur between single quotes, even when preceded by a backslash.

Using double quotes the literal value of all characters enclosed is preserved, except for the dollar sign, the backticks (backward single quotes, ``) and the backslash. [... left some further details ...]

Conclusions - Single quotes are the strongest, safest and easiest to use quotes

Double quotes are useful for e.g. scripting if you still need a working variable substitution, for things like e.g.

echo "Today is: $DATE and $TIME"

If you want to ensure - like in this case - that every character of a volume name is literally taken without any interpretation of the shell or whatever, then the savest way is to use single quotes ('...'):

'/Volumes/Macintosh HD'

As Apple has many roots in Unix ("userland" commands, shell, ..) you can google for "unix quoting" to get even more details on this topic, but this I can only recommend to the interested "coder / scripter".

The essence for you is: single quotes ('...') are the strongest, safest and easiest to use quotes in such cases to keep the volume name literally even if it should use spaces or other special characters.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hi There,
After installing the latest driver 3.27 for FF802 my iMac M1 is still having kernel panic problems sudden reboot(after pink screen) since 2 months now on a weekly basis.
It is obvious that RME hardware are not working properly with the apple M1 machines.
This is getting quiet frustrating and the only solution seems to be switching to another audio interface.
Below is the error message given at the time of the panic reboot:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffe0017aa3338): "busy timeout[0], (60s): 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUserClient', 'RootDomainUser"

macOS 11.7 will still be Big Sur. Monterey will be macOS 12.

Monterey release is tomorrow, so I guess there will be info a little later. RME will probably want to do some testing on the final release version before declaring it a supported OS.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hey smile

Just got a new Macbook Pro M1. I got my FF400 working via a couple of adapters and allowing the RME kernel extension.

Just wanted to report something that happens when I disconnect and connect the FF400 from the Macbook. When I disconnect and connect it again I noticed that midi in/out is not recognised by the Mac and won't work.

I then have to disconnect the FF400, shut down the Macbook, connect the FF400 again and reboot the Mac. Then the midi works again. I mean I can live with it and I am generally really happy that my good ol' FF400 is still going strong and usable to this date, and I don't have to buy a new AI, but it would be nice not to have to do the above to get midi working.

Anyway, just thought I'd share it, most important thing is to be able to make music with what I have smile

Best wishes from Jakob

My mistake, wrote that when I was very tired smile

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Took the plunge - can confirm the 3.27 drivers I installed on 11.6 work without issue (so far!) on macOS 12.0.1.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hello I have down a clean install with Monterey 12.01 and driver version 3,27 and it doesn't work total mix won't launch MBP 13 M1

You don't need to reboot/disconnect anything. Open (/Applications/Utilities/)Audio Midi Setup, go to MIDI Studio (⌘2) and hit ⌘R (refresh midi setup). RME's MIDI should be working now. You can even automate it with apple's Automator app.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Anybody having issues with Fireface UCX II losing connection while recording in Ableton?
Mac OSX 11.6 - M1 Mac Mini - Ableton 11.0.11

It randomly loses connection with the audio engine. Although I can just re-select it every time it loses connection.
Pretty annoying when in a recording session.

Probably Ableton that's not ready for M1 I suspect...

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

I'm curious if there's any ETA on a real driver for macOS 11? I understand the rationale for the workaround with kernel extensions and reduced security mode, but obviously some people won't be OK with reducing the security of their computer to use an interface.

Apple has an alternative to kexts (DriverKit, which puts drivers in userspace)... is there any word on RME drivers that use that method?

Hello all, Found a trick though - manually loading the kext with kmutil after the restart seems to straighten it out:

sudo kmutil load -p /Library/StagedExtensions/Library/Extensions/RMEFirefaceUSB.kext

Thank you Nick for this! This works but after rebooting my Mac, UFX is not recognized again. I need to run that command every time I start my Mac to make it work.

Why is this happening and how to fix this?

My mac is Intel based Mac Mini 2018. I guess why I got this issue is that I most likely clicked the multiple security and restart prompts in wrong order that ended up messing up the installation and security permissions.

-----

Edit: I noticed you and ABS managed to fix this through Recovery mode. I also opened Terminal in Recovery Mode, browsed to /Library/Extensions to check that RMEFirefaceUSB.kext was deleted. I deleted it before going to Recovery Mode using the earlier command you gave:

cd /Library/Extensions/
sudo kextutil -v 2 RMEFirefaceUSB.kext

In recovery mode, I then ran the kernel extension panic medic boot command:

kmutil trigger-panic-medic --volume-root /Volumes/YOUR_HD_DRIVE_NAME

After this I rebooted and after login, I got the Panic Medic Boot prompt saying that I need to grant permissions again to third party kernels when respective programs are launched again.

I closed the notification and I re-installed the RME Driver. This time it prompted asking the permissions again. Previously I have tried to re-install the driver dozen times but I never got the security prompt again. This time I was careful in granting the permissions in correct manner ie. when the Security prompt asked to grant the permissions to RME and asked to restart, I clicked "Not Now". Instead I restarted through the RME Driver Installer as mentioned in the instructions.

Now after rebooting and testing multiple times my mac recognizes my UFX II properly every time and opens Total Mix normally.

Hopefully this post helps others who might encounter the same issue. I hope the installation procedure could be made more bullet-proof and the instructions would highlight what are the correct steps more clearly.

Hi,

I've got the same problem with the last upgrade of my Fireface 802 on Big Sur.
I've done all the process. But when I'm using Terminal in recovery mode, I always have : "kmutil: command not found"
How to resolve that please ?
Thank you

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hi,
Mac M1 Big Sur 11.6.1 installation according to instructions, mac detects fireface uc, but does not output sound and totalmix fx does not display a window.
driver 3.27
totalmix fx 1.75
flash update 138
cleaning the kext and reinstalling the driver does not give any results.
What else can you do?

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Monterey 12.0.1.
Fireface UC
everything worked out after switching the sound card to the mode (AP)

Please also don't forget to switch the Fireface UC to Mac mode (AP) as described in the user manual.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

I know Monterey isn't supported yet, I'm just posting for information.

I have MBP 16" M1 Max 64GB 2TB with MacOS 12.0.1. RME Babyface Pro fs using firmware v130, Driver 3.27.
Kernel extensions were enabled in boot up security settings before driver installation.

All works fine - mic inputs and main, headphone and s/pdif outputs.
BUT, turning on the low cut on the main output 1/2 results in either the left channel going silent, or both channels going silent. The same thing happens when turning on the EQ.

Odd.

I was never able to get anything to work for my babyface. I had to go back to Catalina months ago and things have worked fine since.

Same here.

RME drivers seems like in almost all cases when fail won't work again under Big Sur.

I rolled back to Catalina and it works as it was but I can't get the latest version of Logic Pro X and that really sucks!

So we are kind of stucked in Catalina.

Yeah really disappointing.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Just got one of the new MBP with M1 Max - the RME driver (for my UCX II) is causing ongoing CPU spikes in Ableton sad when running on the internal audio interface there are no issues.

On my old machine with Intel + Catalina I had no issues sad

Anyone else seeing this still?

Edit / Update:

1. Tested on it's own USB port through a dongle - still same issues
2. Upped the buffer to 1024 and seems to help a lot - but this is an extremely high buffer for this new machine and in a project that is audio stems + < 10 plugins. Again had no issues with the project on internal sound card or my previous much weaker machine

I believe there are already some threads here about Ableton on M1 with RME gear. Have you searched the forum?

The first thing to isolate, is the DAW. Does Logic, Reaper, or even Audacity exhibit the same problem?

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

So I think I have narrowed it down to being a combination of using my UCX II with Ableton 11.0.12 and VST2 or VST3 versions of Plugin Alliance plugins.

CPU spikes go away when I switch to internal sound card or when I use the AU version of the plugins.

I just confirmed the same pattern of spikes in Bitwig - and hear even also when using internal soundcard - so seems it could be mainly a problem with these plugins and Rosetta

So at this point I am running back Catalina with driver 321 and works as usual.
It was running after upgrading to Big Sur until I installed the new drivers 327, so are the drivers the problem?
Yes I use two external drives (who doesn't thse days!!) as D.Fuschs said could be a problem-trigger??

I dunno, just really frustrated that I can't move on with Big Sur and miss the new Logic Pro update.

I saw severl gusy experiencing these problems, did anyone found a solution? non of the RME proposed workaround worked in my case, I cleaned up EVERYTHING on my Mac in the last attempt, even old installation .kext and .plist from RME and old ones from other old devices I don't use anymore, software, etc. All that didn't make any difference.

By the way, when I installed for the first time my Fireface I was on Mojave and I don't remember doing the Security & Privacy thing (I might done it...) for sure I didn't when I upgraded to Catalina and the first Big Sur neither asked for it. However it worked perfectly well with driver 321 I just installed the 327 to stay up to date...

Hi, I trying to get my UFX2 to work on a M1pro running 12.0.1

I followed all the steps to do with Terminal and the .kext stuff and seems to have done whatever it had to...I reinstalled the drivers went through the security prompts (in the correct order? I dont know...I had to restart through the security window the installer never gave that option) but still get nothing when I plug my card in. The host light on the interface wont light it up either so left wondering if its to do with the usb A to C converter? Its the default apple white one anybody else using this?

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

I am using the USB3 cable provided with the sound card and it worked perfectly well on Catalina with the v321 drivers.
Also worked when I installed Big Sur, so before I updated the drivers it was working fine, then I updated to the drivers v327 and that did a mess.

I just bought this soundcard, is like 4 months old and problems started...

For what I can see (on other users failures) the new drivers v327 are the problem, Big Sur is more than a year old and stable enough so it might be the v327 driver that conflicts with other drivers or the Big Sur permissions system in some circumstances, unfortunately if your mac came with a Big Sur you can't install Catalina and the v321 driver or even the v321 driver in Big Sur.

I can't see ANY answer from RME other that try this or that and non of the workaround they proposed work for a lot of users like me so where is the "so great" support RME?

Your computer needs a factory reset. Formating the harddrive and clean online-installation of OS.
The driver 327 works fine in BigSur and also Monterey for 3 different interfaces without any issues.

I hope you are right about that, is not an easy thing to do and I have tons of pluggins and sound libraries to re-install just for nothing if that doesn't work again. I already formatted the HD without success but didn't perform the Factory reset,

Then install MacOS on a second drive which can also be something TB or USB3 based, preferrable SSD.
https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/macos … e-3659666/

Perform a minimum installation with RME drivers and DAW and test.
That shouldn't be that time consuming and the benefit is, that you do not need to modify your current installation.

Thank you ramses,

I can easily do that, I have many SSD around and the Big Sur installer saved on a drive too.
Now will it work without the factory reset suggested by waedi?
I guess I have to try to find out.

I can see that for many, the driver v327 works and that is ok, it should!! it was written for that purpose, right?, what I am saying is that not ALWAYS work and that it shouldn't conflict with other devices or the mac os.

I can see that waedi owns 3 RME soundcards and for him the driver works, however non of those are the Fireface UFX+ and for me the driver doesn't, and you have a UFX+ but you run it on windows right? So in different stages it works, in others doesn't.

Anyway I'll try the external setup to see if that works.

Just did the same thing on a new MacBook Pro running Monteray 12.0.1. My Fireface UC shows up, but I am not able to get any sound out of it. I have tried pretty much everything and I believe it's due to the 327 driver. Guess we will have to wait for an update.

Re: Mac USB driver for macOS 11 & Apple Silicon hardware

Hi,

This may help someone.

My UCX II (327) was working fine with my MBP Pro 16" M1 Pro 12.0.1 for ten days, then it stopped working yesterday. I could see it connected in System Information but nothing else. Nothing in AMS, TotalMix didn't see it, etc.
I reinstalled the driver once, nothing, then tried again, this time checking that "Startup Security Utility" setting was still ok. It was, but when rebooting, I got a message that System Extensions needed to be rebuilt, I had to reallow rme extension in Security prefpane and restart again. Got a "rebuilding extensions cache" message then a restart with two boot chimes and everything is working again.
I write this as I recall it, not the exact words and I don't know what triggered the "need rebuilding" part but there should be a way to force cache rebulding.

This is often the case with many software, Reaper updates for example, at first attempt opening the program this interruption appears and I have to open the system preferences security settings and allow to open the program.
But only once.
The next time I start Reaper it opens without issue.
