Topic: Just looking for a basic digital interface with AES

I'm not a producer, so no need for 32 channels or whatever. Does RME have an entry-level digital interface (either a card or external) that supports AES output?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Just looking for a basic digital interface with AES

HDSPe AES would be the card solution or external like USB interface it starts with the Fireface 802.
AES connectivity is not entry-level, it is more at the advanced side.
It would be helpful to know more about your setup.
What computer is it ?
What device with AES connector you want to connect ?
Do you want to record something or only play music from a computer ?

Re: Just looking for a basic digital interface with AES

Waedi, I think you overlooked something.

Some devices offer coax SPDIF which can be switched to AES format and output level, then with a "cinch to AES" converter you can provide an AES connection:

UC manual, ch 24.2
https://www.rme-audio.de/download/fface_uc_d.pdf
https://www.rme-audio.de/download/fface_uc_e.pdf

UCX manual, ch 21.2
https://www.rme-audio.de/download/fface_ucx_d.pdf
https://www.rme-audio.de/download/fface_ucx_e.pdf

As far as I understand the manual, the UC and UCX SPDIF coax ports are AES compatible.

"[...]Professional AES/EBU equipment can be connected to the Fireface UCX thanks to its ‘Professional’
format option and a doubled output voltage. Output cables should have the same pinout
as those used for input (see above), but with a male XLR plug instead of a female one. [...]"

The whole thing is nicely explained in the manual.

I suppose SPDIF coaxial would be fine, too. Using an ADI-2 Pro FS R BE. USB input is otherwise occupied. I also want to run my computer to it. Before I start looking at DDCs, I thought I'd see if RME has a card or something that will give it to me. AES seems preferable because it leaves my coaxial open for other sources (which are more commonly coaxial). Also, I haven't tested it but AES is all the rage amongst the audiophiles these days. Thought it might be better. Main thing is that this isn't a mission critical setup and don't want to spend a grand. Few hundred bucks maybe.

Something like this ?
I have no idea if that works... It is just the cheapest AES output

Re: Just looking for a basic digital interface with AES

HDSPe AIO or HDSPe AIO Pro both have AES/EBU stereo out that would work well with the ADI-2 Pro models. You could alternatively use optical SPDIF with any RME interface with ADAT/SPDIF optical ports. The most affordable interface from RME is the Digiface USB.

Digital transfer is lossless. Its the same quality whether you choose ADAT, SPDIF, AES ...
So you can choose any RME interface with such digital outputs ..

You can validate it yourself by using the bit test, see manual ch 34.22

Lossless, yes. But timing matters.

Thanks! Am I correct in that the Digiface USB only outputs ADAT? I'm kind of looking for coaxial. Would something like the HDSP 9632 do this via its breakout cable?

The audio content is identical, there's no difference between AES and SPDIF... What "timing"?

Jitter, for example. I've found it can be fairly easy to distinguish optical from coaxial or USB under blind testing. For this reason, I prefer coaxial or AES.

Re: Just looking for a basic digital interface with AES

Jitter ?
But Jitter comes from converters and has effect only on the other converter.
The digital format AES SPDIF optical or coax has no soundquality.
What device did you use for hearing differences between optical and coax ?
And witch one sounded better ?
