Topic: RME 9652 driving me crazy

Hello.

I have a RME 9652 PCI.

It was working perfectly in one computer (i7 870).

I decided to buy and AMD 3950X, msi X570 gaming plus motherboard.

I connected the RME 9652 with an Startech PCIe to PCI adapter.

The RME 9652 is recognized by Windows 10 64 bits, I can see it in device manager, i can see the inputs, the outputs.

PROBLEM: I don't have sound. I tried a lot of things and doesn't work.

I did a lot of test but the most significative was to try with my RME Babyface...

RME Babyface --> Adat --> Focusrite Saffire 56 --> I HAVE SOUND

RME Babyface --> No adat  connected (but ADAT 1+2 selected as output) --> I CAN SEE SIGNAL IN TOTALMIX

RME 9652 --> ADAT --> Focusrite Saffire 56 --> I DONT HAVE SOUND, EVEN PLAYER OF MUSIC DOESNT MOVE, YOUTUBE TOO

RME 9652 --> No adat connected (but ADA 1+2 selected as output) --> I DONT HAVE SIGNAL IN TOTAL MIX

I tried with dirvers 4.36, with drivers 4.30. I  updated windows, i updated BIOS.

I also tried to change 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, etc. In RME and in saffire... but finally even if disconnect the saffire... i dont have any signal in totalmix with the RME 9652.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: RME 9652 driving me crazy

What kind of adapter is this exactly, how does the card fit in? What does the HDSP Settings window show as Input Status?

Re: RME 9652 driving me crazy

I answer all. But first of all.

NEW TESTS
1.- OLD COMPUTER (i7-870) + RME 9652 - PCI
--- Works perfectly

2.- OLD COMPUTER (i7-870) + ADAPTER PCIe to PCI +RME 9652
--- Works perfectly
--- Conclusion adapter works, rme 9652 works

https://ibb.co/H2ChGwL

https://ibb.co/9sLCKFX

https://ibb.co/wBrCJQj

3.- NEW COMPUTER (amd 3950X) + ADAPTER PCIe to PCI +RME 9652

--- I play mp3 and I don't have any signal in totalmix, even if mp3 player is moving. I did a lot of test. Depends of test mp3 player moves or not. If moves, no signal  in total mix.

--- I connect guitar to saffire 56 --> adat in --> I have signal in total mix.

--- I open cubase, one projet, one track, click on play button --> I don't have signal even on the meters of the mixer in cubase!

--- I open ableton live, Preferences.. audio... choose RME... click on "test signal" (beeeeep) --> No sound, even the test.

--- I tried different options in BIOS about PCI gen.., auto, gen4, gen3, gen2...loading defaults again...

Note: When i was doing test Number 2 (with old computer) I save the config of rme totalmix and saffire 56, Later i load in the new computer to have exactly the same settings. Nothing. I tried to reset to default, nothing too. :-(

--- I tried to do "loop test" putting adat1 out to adat1 in only with RME to see if I have signal... nothing.

--- I tried to disconnect the adat wires. I dont have signal in total mix. (The same test with babyface shows signal in totalmix)

PHOTO OF ADAPTER

I did modding of the box, that it fits perfectly.

Re: RME 9652 driving me crazy

There seems to be a Molex power connector on the adapter, but it looks like it's not connected to the power supply...

I disconnected the audio card and the adapter, only to show you on the photo, because you asked me about the adapter and how is connected.

I would like that that would be the problem but no. I connected the molex for the test with old computer (works) and for the test with new computer (doesnt work).

I think that has to be something related to windows-rme-motherboard.

Re: RME 9652 driving me crazy

Have you tried the adapter in various slots and made sure there are no PCIe related energy savings options active in BIOS or Windows?

Re: RME 9652 driving me crazy

I was checking now in BIOS and in Windows but nothing seems to me turning off PCIe power. Even I see that is almost everything in maximum perfomance.

About checking in different slots I tried. But I'm going to try again.

But I want to do one question to simply the problem: If I disconnect all the ADAT wires and I play a mp3 file... do i have to see signal in totalmix ? Because then I can simply the problem.

By default you should see the mp3 signal in Totalmix in the middle row first channel from left, also without any adat cables connected.
The computer should have selected the RME card as default audio device.

Thanks for this reply. I'm trying now without any adat. I'm using ADAT 1+2 as output on Windows

Thanks to this I advanced a little bit.

I had tried in 3 of the 4 empy pice slots (there are 5 but one is for the graphic card). So.. I tried in the number 4 of 4 and in that one 9652 + adapter works.
I add the saffire and works.
I add the UAD2 and then I start to see problems. Not because of UAD2 (I think). Because of combination. I don't know why now the system shows UAD2 OK, Firewire OK, RME OK but I dont' have sound on RME (and no signal in totalmix). I'm changing position of cards and downloading last UAD Drivers. I think that the solution is close. I still trying things.

Thanks

Re: RME 9652 driving me crazy

The UAD card probably occupy the channels 1/2 that has the music that you want to get into Totalmix ?
Is the UAD card now the default audio device in the windows audio settings ? Is it possible to choose other channels for it ?
Looks like a configuration problem.

My assumption is yes, you should see sound in SW Playback Channel, e.g. ADAT1/2 if you are using these two channels.
I installed for you my old RayDAT again to my Win10 20H2 system to validate this for you.
Now I can confirm to you that this is indeed the case, you can see audio in SW playback channel ADAT1/2 and also on "Main Out" in the TM FX control room.

While doing that I did some screenshots for you, so that you can compare for your installation.

The steps:
1. installed RayDAT
2. Windows device manager shows RayDAT as "Other Devices -> Audiocontroller for Multimedia"
https://www.dropbox.com/s/flmrcpm7o8yr20c/2021-05-16%20RayDAT%20installed%20-%20but%20no%20HDSPe%20ASIO%20driver.jpg?dl=1
3. Installation of latest RME HDSPe driver (v4.36). Windows device manager shows RayDAT as Audido device
https://www.dropbox.com/s/bt2vft4t9yc33q4/2021-05-16%20RayDAT%20installed%20with%20ASIO%20driver.jpg?dl=1
4. RayDAT is shown in Windows Sound Settings, standard sound device is still UFX+ as configured
https://www.dropbox.com/s/iq6gowofkz71u3i/2021-05-16%20RayDAT%20in%20Windows%20Sound%20Settings.jpg?dl=1
5. Using MusicBee player with ASIO support, selecting RME HDSP driver, configure channels ADAT1/2 for audio
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5wuw0y9vvhf8x … n.jpg?dl=1
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wheaqhgiden43 … n.jpg?dl=1
6. Restarting MusicBee after change of sound driver settings (required!), playing music, you see audio in TM FX
a) middle row: SW Playback Channel ADAT1/2
b) bottom row: "Main Out" in control room (assigned to HW Output ADAT 1/2)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/a3plqi5sgkpjt2k/2021-05-16%20MusicBee%20Playback%20to%20ADAT1%2B2%2C%20TotalMix%20FX%201.72.jpg?dl=1
7. Now restart of Windows is needed to get the settings dialog for HDSPe cards started up and visible in the Windows Info field
8. If you have an ARC USB like me, than you need to deactivate it now for the HDSP card, so that its only in use for UFX+, the main recording interface in the system.

Looks like a configuration problem.

About this, the problem happens without UAD too. It is an UAD 2 Duo (DSP plugins). Is not an audio interface.

Thanks a lot ramses for your work. You are awesome.

In any case I think that I found one... solution? I will explain now...

Re: RME 9652 driving me crazy

SOLUTION ???
--------------------

After testing all what was said in this thread I found that everything works if I connect the PCIe cards in one specfic order. I will put here because maybe other people has the same problem.

MOTHER BOARD: MSI X570 GAMING PLUS
PCIE5 (in the opposite side of the processor) = ADAPTER + RME 9652
PCIE4 (empty)
PCIE3 = UAD2 Duo
PICE2 = PCIe Fiwire (using Legacy Driver)
PCIE1 = Graphic Card

Re: RME 9652 driving me crazy

Sometimes the order of cards is important, depending on how PCIe lanes are distributed/shared in the system.
Especially if you have a combination of board/chipset and CPU that has not so many.

If I remember right from other cases then ASUS documentation is not so verbose in that regards compared to e.g. supermicro for a server mainboard. Maybe mainboard docu might have given a hint here, which sockets to prefer in terms of
a) whether it comes from CPU / chipset and
b) whether PCIe lanes are shared with other devices

So I would simply "accept" that as a working solution and congrads that you found it, that was a tricky one wink
