Topic: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

Hello fellow RME fans

Just a small promotion here for a widget I've developed to work with TotalMix FX, for Windows OS only (sorry).  It provides an on-screen display of the volume level of up to three hardware output channels, mute and volume for those channels, control room functions plus shortcuts, and also a shortcut for the TotalMix FX window.  I see it as an accessory for the ARC USB really, and also the Babyface and MADIface desktop.

Matthias Carstens kindly ok'd me to post about it here on RME's forum.

Price is USD $5.

Demo can be trialed for an hour at a time.  Activation code sent automatically on purchase.  Checkout is handled by SellApp.

cheers!

Just a small update to say there is now a demo for this widget.  You can trial Nix for an hour at a time and test it out in your environment.  Purchasing a license sends an activation code to your email, to fully register Nix.

Cheers.

Re: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

Please pin this thread, because Simon did not get enough attention for this great program and people likely will miss that a solution to display different volume levels, change them via hotkeys and use control room functions exist. I even think that RME should include those solutions in their driver. If not at least they should make those available in the downloads section as well. And if not at the very least they should very clear mention those existing 3rd party options, so that every new user not easily can find the information, but is guided to that information (via handbook, website, forum).

P.S.: In contrast to "Totalmix volume control for Windows" this solution works for me and offers more features, while at the same time being much more lightweight.

Re: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

Demoed this for a few minutes and purchased a license almost immediately. Being able to include Speaker B is a very welcome addition for my purposes. I appreciated "Totalmix Volume Control," especially being free. But I had frequent disconnects, especially after my PC wakes from sleep. If that happens with Nix, I'm going to assume it may be related to some combination of my Totalmix settings + OSC + Windows going awry.

On another note, I'm very pleased with how Nix handles Volume up and down increments with simple whole numbers. Doing it by percentage got me inconsistent results when pressing the vol up/down buttons. I know it's nitpicky, but if I wanted to quickly recall a specific volume, it was often off by a few decimal points. If I'm A/B-ing something, I want it to be identical.

EDIT: I'd also like to request that this thread be stickied. I think the community would be well served. BTW, no disconnects after my PC waking from sleep, or otherwise. So far so good.

EDIT 2: Over a week later, still no disconnects. As stable as can be.

Re: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

I am using Nix now for a few months and do not have any problems. Simon did a great job to even catch edge-cases, so I am very confident that Nix is running stable and reliable, which for me "Totalmix Volume Control" wasn't.

Re: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

Thanks for the bump rpnfan.  I had actually forgotten about this thread as it's so quiet.  Have updated version in the OP.  Cheers!

Seems fine here, never more than 0.4% cpu in Process Explorer.  I took great pains to make Nix as efficient as possible.  But I must admit I haven't tested it on anything prior to Intel 8th gen H cpu.

You can run it for an hour at a time in demo mode to see if it works for you.

Hi.  Thanks for supporting Nix.  It was something I hacked together for myself, then some colleagues said I should make it available.  It was a lot of work to make it palatable for others, even though it's "nothing".

Your feedback: could you expand on "custom channels or channel choice"?  Do you mean Hardware Inputs and Software Outputs?  Also, "support for additional devices" ?  As far as I can test with a few RME devices I have, Nix supports TotalMix FX not specific devices.

Cheers

Re: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

Congrats @Potscrubber for Nix. It looks nice! (Being on macOS, I haven't used it myself)

Reading this thread makes me feel there are 4 bot posts. All one-time-posters with a short name and some numbers, super positive review-like comments, a smilie at the end, which by the way contain a link to polish house-renovation websites ...
It hurts seeing helpful community members answering to this AI-produced BS.

Re: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

Thanks for pointing that out, didn't notice. Indeed all somehow polish accounts, apparently.

Re: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

I've had a couple of reports that Nix cannot find TotalMix FX in C:\Windows\System32, and a user reported that his TMFX exe is in fact now within Program files\RME\Fireface.

edit: just found the info I need in the RME Downloads section for TotalMixFX.

Will have a new Nix version for users of 64 bit TotalMixFX in the new location shortly.

Re: Nix - displays/shortcuts widget for TotalMix FX Windows (Intel x64)

Version 2.8 is now released, and automatically handles TotalMix FX installed folder locations and executable names both old and new-style.  It took me a while to work out a logic I was happy with that covered all situations (including using TotalMix Remote), with minimal user management required.

Changelog in the OP updated.

Thanks to all the Nix users who support the project!

Nix has become a critical part of my workflow here and I couldn't function without it. It is such an elegant and beautifully designed app. Installation was simple. A huge thank you for developing this amazing piece of software!!

For anyone using the ARC remote this is an essential tool - highly, highly recommended.

Just a note for anyone using Nix with TotalMix FX beta 2.x.  Currently the beta arrives called: TotalMixFX.exe

However, recent release downloads that are using the new location of C:\Program Files\RME\Fireface (or Madiface) are using an executable called TotalMixFX_x64.exe

Nix "elects" a TotalMix FX executable - in order to work with old and new installations.  This is how it prioritizes which one to use:

1. Any TotalMix FX that is currently running
2. Any that is set to autostart with Windows (in the RME registry key - details in Nix User Guide)
3. Any in C:\Program Files\RME\<any folder> over C:\Windows\System32
4. Any called TotalMixFX_x64.exe over TotalMixFX.exe.
5. The higher version number (after all of the above).

So if you copy beta 2.x TotalMixFX.exe to C:\Program Files\RME\Fireface alongside the 1.99 TotalMixFX_x64.exe .... then the non beta will "win" the election if no TotalMix is running.

How to get around this with the beta:

Temporary: Manually start TotalMixFX.exe beta 2 (not with the Nix shortcut key).  Optionally run Nix after you start TotalMix FX, but it shouldn't matter.

Permanent: Rename the beta to TotalMixFX_x64.exe, and edit the registry key to autostart that exe with Windows (details in the Nix User Guide).

Accepting any suggestions on changing the election priorities.  Perhaps the version number should be above the executable name and the location.
