Topic: Can I measure real dynamic range of the recording?

I have digitized shellac records from 1920. In that time due to technological reasons the dynamic range of the recordings was around 26-28dB. But when the records were digitized, they were full of noise due to the shellac material degradation.

I would like to measure, what is the real dynamic range of this digitized recordings (include this noise). Can I use Digickeck for this? Is the „Bitstatistics and Noise” the right tool for do that?

You basically want to measure Signal to Noise Ratio. You can use any meter for that as long as it measures RMS. Just compare the groove noise (no music/audio playing) with the loudest part found. The difference in dB would be your SNR.

Thank you for clarification, MC. All the best!
